Planning to do a trip down to Northern Spain next June and have read some good reports on the Picos….if anyone has recommendations regarding the towns that offer the best accommodation, restaurants etc would be great. Having a “base” would be preferable for 2/3 nights, enjoying the roads without dragging the panniers along would be the aim….Also plan to have a night or two in a seaside resort Santander/ Bilbao area, if there are any recommendations. Cheers, and Merry Christmas to everyone.

I don't know if it's still a problem, but the best roads around Andorra are closed for motos. Check that to make sure.

Panniers on a Monster are not allowed. Take them off and dispose of them. Max 20 liter tail bag and tiny tank bag/hip bag. We must maintain a certain level of style - it's not a BMW. :cool:

I'm heading there in May on the Triumph Tiger with a group for 10 days. Rosslare to Bilbao ferry booked on early bird rate. Planning on Picos among other routes. Haven't booked accommodation yet so would be interested to hear any recommendations etc on here.

Agree with your pannier sentiments Arne…..that’s why it’s the ST 1050 that does the heavy lifting on my European trips 😜
Going down via the Chunnel, Vannes, Bordeaux and probably back on the ferry. Been thinking of checking out prices to Rosslaire….then up to Ulster and over to Cairnryan……got a bit fed up with the 500 miles from Portsmouth to Glasgow.
Like Phil I’m interested to hear where others have stayed…..

went in 2019 and had booked accommodation ahead but both out/in ferry were cancelled due to ferry breakdown, ended up using booking.com.
going again this year and will book as we go.picos(y)

Simon Wear has routes for that area in his Euro book and I think on his site. Also there were some on the Ride magazine site.

If you know where your stopping just post a change of cloths to your destinations with a pre addresses return for your dirties. Allows you to take the basics and enjoy your ride just as you planed👌

Good thinking Leam….that only leaves five pairs of shoes, hairdryer , straighteners and bags and bags of potions, creams etc…….then I’ve got to get the wife’s stuff in as well 😜
But I really shouldn’t complain, this will be Euro trip number 15…… from Assen to Jerez and Le Mans to Spielberg and every GP track in between, I’m a lucky , lucky guy to have a partner who gets as excited as me about Euro trips and I do my best to find nice places to have some relaxation time built in. The Picos area looks relatively compact so I’m aiming for a 3 night base and we can explore without the luggage, then a couple of nights in a seaside resort on the North Spanish coast.
As always part of the fun is building the trip and doing the “knowledge “….

I happen to think the Ducati Performance internally-framed expandable panniers on my Monster look very tasteful! I’ve been to Spain & Portugal using them many times.
I’ve ridden the Picos de Europa routes and the surrounding areas quite a lot, but nowadays I tend to prefer the more remote mountainous roads in the Spanish-Portuguese border regions.
Anyone wanting some advice on Iberian locations and stuff is welcome to DM me.

Most years we go to the Picos, we generally stay in Cangas de Onis, which is about a 90 minute ride from Santander Ferry
Cangas has plenty of restaurants and hotels and places to buy cheese
I have a kriega pack and carry enough for a good week away
The other town which may be worth looking at is Potes, further south but again with restaurants and hotels
There’s a good triangle route to ride from Cangas - Riano- Panes

Thanks for the heads up, Potes was on my list but I’ll check out Cangas before making my plans. Has anyone got a recommendation for a nice seaside town on the North Coast….within a couple of hours of Bilbao / Santander ?

Do what REACHER does in the novels buys a new set of cheapo under wear and a shirt every few days and dumps the dirty stuff in a bin ...

For a seaside-ish place conveniently near to Santander, try Santillana del Mar. It's rather touristy, but generally good value with lots of places to stay and eat. (You have to ride up the hill past the pedestrian-only entrance road, and then sort of loop around to the right back down into the village.)

Excellent, I’ll check it out. Probably going to return via Bilbao to Roscommon so may be looking for something closer to Bilbao.
