My brother is having starting issues that we are working through...

Good info here on starter upgrades that I've noted.

His (original) handlebar assembly is VERY worn-out; I tried JHP for a replacement for 65040062A and they appear to be not made anymore???

I see little point in buying a used item from a breaker and wonder if anyone has tried newer - I actually have a Hyper 1100 start switch (somewhere) so will be looking at that but my splicing skills are not brilliant!

Next, Starter relay replacement 39740011A
JHP quote £40 which is not excessive but, is there something better?
I read somewhere of a Yam unit being good.
Electrex was my first choice but their's is generic (eg not plug n play).

I change the solenoid on my 900SS for a unit from from a Mini car of all things, it needed an earth of its own and was larger then OEM but worked well for years.

Thanks in advance.

I believe (but I’m not 100% sure for that year) that switchgear on ie models is the same as Suzuki Bandit of the same vintage. It certainly is for later ie models. You might need to change the connectors to suit Ducati wiring.

Both are generic parts and were never manufactured by Ducati therefore I guess they are all patern parts

The relay yes I have used one and it was perfect

The switch no I have not needed to, BUT if its being sold by Stein-Dinse then I'd say thats 99% going to be a good part, they are a dealer of some standing within Ducati circles

Bottom line is you cannot get new ones from Ducati therefore you have no choice other than patern or second hand !!!!

Many time you will find as Slob pointed out the same part being used on different manufacturers bikes, just takes a bit of detective work to find out

Yes - I have a 70's Toyota fuel filter ready for the 900 as they are NLA from Ducati

Many Thanks for the replies.

The eBay solenoid looks fine but no Amperage is mentioned so, I'm wary.

If I'm going to convert to non-std then this 150A from the Aprilia world would be my choice

As for the starter switch; it seems the same unit was used on 748/916/996/998 also.

They are available in France but I'm guessing about £120 by the time we get raped on import duty/taxes etcetera...

Meanwhile in Gotham city:

I found the 1100 Hypermotard switch that appears similar in operation (comparing wiring diagrams says the same). BUT, wire colours are different and OF COURSE, the old version has a flat Superseal connection while the Hyper item uses two pairs of connectors stacked above each other in a box.

I did have the idea of wiring up an adapter cable so both OEM cables 'remain the same' but my patience is at a premium these days lol.

*Fuel filter, these guys even tell you where else to look ;-)

Not as you thought available in France as stated on the link you posted

Article en rupture de stock (Item is out of stock)

Many thanks Kato - I did not see that (or notice) it.

Re others: I'm sure I saw the original unit is only 60mm wide...

Like me, my older Bro now has no hair - lol - at least I didn't PULL MINE OUT!

He asked me if the M900 2002 Y.M. starter might work - sadly, totally different:

Thanks - I'll check it out! Mind you mine was the odd / rare type with the inlet and outlet opposite ach other where as most others that look like this have one at a right angle to the body and one out the bottom but in similar white plastic. All sorted though as got 2 on an offer via ebay for a tenner ;)

That switch will of course work if rewired withe correct plug but as you are already aware it's double the width of the original

NP Looked a good part for that price. I would have had it myself but your need is greater. I'm actually making an effort to thin out my spares to raised ££ for a small hobby pillar drill.

Extra thanks for your consideration then @Darren69

I'll post an ebay image for the HM1100 switch I have, quite similar; a little wider but the connector is quite different (as is the wire colour coding!) so it would be a pain to rewire or make an adapter.

I bought a drill stand and used a spare drill I had and found it acceptable for needs at the time. Sadly, there IS a lot of 'slop' in the horizontal plane now.

Word of advice re the hobby pillar drill, having one with the table on a rack that you can raise or lower with a handle is well worth the extra spondulix particularly if you want to control the depth of drilling.
