Hi all, so I wondering about how to shed a bit of weight from my S2r 1000ds lump. It's about time for a service so could be an opportunity to swap a few components. I've got a set of ergal belt wheels, plus a friend is making up Ti nuts/Al spacer to suit. Also looking into making Ti tensioner brackets. Which brings me to the matter of lightening the large timing drive gear and also the large starter motor gear. Obviously I could lighten the ones I have, but have noticed that in more modern engines (ie 2015 Scambler 800) Ducati lighten these two components as standard. They appear to be the same, question is are they inter changeable?
Any other suggestions for loosing a few gms?

A year or so ago Vince (Luddite) started a thread along the lines of his carbon “obsession “….. I’m no psychologist but I’m feeling a similar vibe in your recent posts…..😂🤣😂

No idea if still in business but MADASL Racing (website still accessable) used to offer a service to reduce the weight of the standard flywheel. Might be worth a phone call.

When I first had some Ti machining done, the machinist warned me of how addictive Titanium was. Turns out Carbon fiber is a similar vice.
Re Madasl, well I know they were in business about four years ago, because they made me a set of 45mm Spaghetti headers. So I'll bear them in mind. But it would be easier/more convient/cheaper if say 1100 Scrambler gears would fit.

All the gears from across most of the range so 900, 1000, 1100, 74x. 99x, 1098 etc are mostley interchangable gears fron R & RS spec bikes tend to be steel & lighter than the cast ones BUT there are some differing sizes usually 1 or 2 teeth for instance 3 differnce primary drive gear sizes all will fit as long as you fit both gears, several differing oil pump ratios

In my old M900 i'm using a factory G/box from an 1198rs primaries from a 1098r a corse oil pump starter sprag from a 749r and a 998rs alternator so yes they fit can't vouch for the later stuff as not had my hands on any

As above, primary drive ratios vary on some models and the oil pump gears are different accordingly.

I have a 1000DS oil pump on my M900 and I had to change the gear as it didn't mesh with the Monster primary.

I fitted a lightweight flywheel to my s4r, the original weighed over 2kg, its replacement was 250 grams, my local independent Ducati guy said 250g isn't a flywheel, 250g is a pack of butter ;-)
It makes a massive difference, the engine spins up really fast and the engine braking is immense....

Yes, light flywheel is the way to go. My Monster has a very light ally flywheel as does my 916 and they spin up/down very quickly.

The only downside is being prone to stalling when cold but otherwise a big improvement.

On the 916 models, you can actually completely remove the flywheel for even more response. If I ever go in there again, I might do so.

If you ever need a cure for your Carbonitis or titanitus, just buy an old Moto Guzzi.
You'll soon see the futility of lightening regimes starting out at 220kg dry!
Surprisingly she rolls along a treat with a sporty feel and handles a dream. comfy as can be with superb road holding and brakes.

Emzedder has a nice bike hardly any heavier than a bicycle and it chuffs along happily at speeds up to 40mph and higher. He's done loads of cheerful miles on that.

BTW, funny how this thread is now about primary and gearbox gears when it was a question about the starter gears???

Well Gazza I'm guessing that the change of direction in topic will be down to some responses being A.I. generated?!*
Mind you it's interesting to learn about the opportunities to prat about with gear ratios too.
Re lightweight flywheels, I went for a comprimise with a 960gm steel version (-1kg approx) having heard humours that Ali ones sometimes loosen due to expansion/contraction action. No idea if that's actually fact.

rather than a nonsensical AI tangent (I think I know all the respondants) it’s just grabbed the general topic of weight loss.

crawsue: bitza’s been on this path for over five years -)

Given Bitza's quest for weight loss, I think primary gears & flywheel are an appropriate discussion topic as there's weight can be removed from them and certainly more so than from starter gears, especially WRT the flywheel.

Yup…..I’m aware of Bitsa’s long term issues….and I’m certain that there’s no sign of a cure, yet. I’m not aware of his size or weight…or what his normal riding gear is…..perhaps there is scope in that direction ? 😋 Carbon wheels are often touted as the most noticeable mod…..and a carbon helmet must save a few grams…..as will baldy tyres…🤪

I saved 15-20kg over the last ten tears by reducing the lump of meat on the back ;-)

way cheaper than cf/ti/mg until you have to replace half your riding gear, unless you’d not sold the stuff you’d grown out of

Rob when you say you saved weight with the meat on the back, I assume you put her in doors on a diet?
