• PLEASE NOTE THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WHEN ATTENDING A MONSTER MEET/RIDEOUT

    1. All riders ride at their OWN risk.
    2. The UKMOC will not be held liable for any accidents to riders/passengers/motorcycles whatsoever.
    3. You are deemed to be in control of your own motor cycle at all times
    4. Please let the ride leader know, if you are intending to 'peel off' en-route.

    ADVICE FOR THOSE LEADING RIDEOUTS

    1. Make yourself known to all persons who intend to rideout with you.
    2. We recommend the 'Drop-Off' system for group rides.
    3. Find out if everyone has ridden in a group before - if not explain any relevant info.
    4. Ensure all have enough fuel - and locate nearest garages to the meet point.
    5. Ask everybody to ride slightly 'off-set' - eg - do not directly follow the bike in front WHERE POSSIBLE. (this leaves extra braking room).
    6. HAVE FUN!

Here's something to look forward to for September.
I will definitely be going to have a look, maybe we could have a club visit?
Plenty of time to sort it.

My sister knows the son of XH169's owner, so she's put me in touch.
I can only assume that the complete aircraft is stored on RAF Marham base, as security passes are needed to view her.
I'm finding out what's involved in getting up close and how many will be allowed to do that.
Please register an interest if you would like me to try and sort a group visit to XH169.

A group visit has got the thumbs up and is a goer.

Please could you give me your full name in order to get a day pass. Photo ID may be required on the day (driving licence or passport). This will be an escorted pass so no long application form like previous RAF visits.

A gentle bump for this.

Any more interested? I would like to submit the list to get the passes.

Just in case you missed my email, please include me on your list for Marham.
Dave

Update. Date change.

I find this utterly unbelievable, but I can't do much about it!
Please see email copied below stating date change to 1st and 2nd of October

MARHAM CANBERRA DAYS update. RAF Marham is observing the Royal period of mourning for the Queen, which means no public events will take place before the 26th September. To comply with this, we have moved the Canberra Days back to Saturday and Sunday 1st and 2nd October. The plan for the Days remains the same; in addition to the cockpits on show (including XH135, tours of XH169, the Heritage Centre, Canberra models (as in aircraft!), memorabilia and parts sale, photo albums, etc, we have a programme in the conference room that, provisionally includes:
• Canberra film show (a loop of short Canberra films) - various times in the day with different films
Presentations, discussions, Q&A on:
• Bombers and Interdictors
• Asymmetric – the Canberra’s main problem
• Recce Rules!
• Target towing, jamming – and more: overview and discussion
• .. and more

It's not clear to me at the moment whether the Canberra XH169 tour will be on the Saturday, Sunday or both. I will find out.

If this move makes it possible for more to attend, please just drop me your FULL name and I will get you a pass for the tour.

That's a shame, however I'm not surprised the armed forces would observe the Royal mourning period.

Why don't we have a meet instead on Saturday the 24th?

Why not?
Saturday or Sunday?
If you name the venue, I'll put it in the newsletter and try to be there.

Yes, that's a good idea, be good to get the bike out. I'm good for Marham the following weekend. Dave

I'm afraid I've had a major humour failure with this!

I've just been informed that the dates have changed yet again to the 8th and 9th of October.

I give up!

It looks like they have rustled up an alternative display at former RAF West Raynham on Sat 24th with Canberra XH135 cockpit and possibly a Hunter and Vampire, near the restored control tower.
This could be a good excuse for a fall-back September meet, I'm trying to find out when the event opens and if there is any on site catering. If not we can pop into Fakenham for a snack either before or after having a look at RAF West Raynham.

Watch this space.

Well, three of us went to the alternative exhibition at West Raynham and had a good time.

The re-scheduled original event at RAF Marham is happening next weekend (8th and 9th Oct). I have arranged for our group tour into the base to view the Canberra gate guardian XH169 at about 10.30am on Sunday 9th. We'll be the first tour I think.

So lets meet at 10am at the RAF Marham Aviation Heritage Centre. PE33 9NP.
If you go into the base via the signposted entrance on the East side of Marham village, it's a straight drag all the way with the Museum on your left at the end of a row of shops (including a cafe I think).

What's at West Raynham now?
I served there throughout the 80's, First in the missile servicing bay (crap Job) then on the handling team (Brilliant Job) and finally I worked on the Radar system.

The base is basically derelict, apart from the control tower museum, a few of the buildings have businesses operating out of them and a couple of the hangers are in use from what observed. Unless Gazza knows any further details?
The housing stock looks like it's been sold off. There is a pub? Amongst the houses.

It's still lived in, and the rest is an industrial estate.
The runway is now a solar farm, and part of the peri is used as a runway but it's not clear who uses it. Club use I would imagine?
The bare bones are intact, and the buildings look generally in good order. Although the concrete and roadways are deteriorating a bit.

The control tower has been largely restored by a private couple, as Grumpy say's, as a museum and also as accommodation on the upper two floors, which I believe will be a holiday let.

Dave and I chatted to a fellow with a large ugly motorbike as he was leaving. He used to work on the Bloodhounds in the sheds to the east of the main runway, now no longer visible due to the solar farm. He loved the Bloodhounds and was visibly excited when he told us they used to let one off once a year.. :mand:
