Something I did a while back on my path to advanced riding, and I still remember the skills and the fun that I had on a Bikesafe course.

If you're new to riding, or just want to brush up on your road safety skills you can't go wrong with one of these great value days in association with the UK Police forces around the UK.

It makes sense for them to try and teach you some life preserving riding skills, rather than them have to deal with you after you've crashed.

This is something I have always put off thinking I'll do it later. If I keep my road bike it's something I really must get around to do.

I did a london one when I first got back into riding after several years off and never having ridden in a place fool of so many road retards as london. I thought it was pretty good, lots of personalised feedback and I enjoyed the day. They used to run out of the Ace cafe but I believe they've moved.

Also did the castle Combe one which they are advertising on that page, it wasn't that similar in terms of format, the feedback was limited and I'm sure we just did one short ride, my memory may be failing me of course. We did get 20mins on the track at the end which was my first time near one, so I quite enjoyed that bit. It was cheaper than the london one in fairness.

I did one on not so legal 749 (tiny plate and termis) did not complain.
I did warn him about engine braking on those bikes, he did not listen till first corner......

I need to do another one of these, I last did one four years ago, it absolutely poured down for most of it and I think I was the slowest person they've ever seen. Another guy who was with us was like a rocket despite the bad weatherbut told me after that the faster he went the closer the big BMW got, think you have to be quite tidy to outrun those guys but as long as your safe they will have some fun.

I learned loads (about my bad habits) and it still sticks with me.

I did the essex course last year on a very suspect S1000rr (race pipe, tiny plate etc) they loved it and actually encouraged me to 'give it the beans' on a few occasions.

All joking aside, a great day with a bunch of genuine biking enthusiasts that just happened to wear a high vis and ride BMW's.

Did one last year, just me and one other bloke had the full attention of one met officer for the whole day. Can't praise it highly enough and will def do it again. They do a bike check before you ride off and my right rear indicator stopped working so I was told to use hand signals! Thankfully I was able to fix it over lunch :-)

Done the Essex, Leicestershire and Cheshire bike safes.... all very good, all slightly different formats but on each the police riders were top blokes. Good way to find some cracking local roads too...

I remember doing a Essex one after a friend and I were stopped and pointed into a car park by a police officer on the road. Dread running through my mind at the 'progress' we'd been making prior to being stopped, only to be pleasantly surprised when all it was, was to entice us into doing a bikesafe day. They even gave us free tea and a bacon roll to sway us.
