Road tax woes

Has anyone had trouble renewing their road tax online recently?

I just tried mine, and it wouldnt process it as my insurance details werent on the Motor Insurance Database (MID). I then checked on the MID website with their search option, and its not on there.

Now I have my insurance docs with me, so I know im all legit, but in the eyes of the police, if they do checks on their databases when following me etc, im not insured!

I phoned up Ducati Insurance and they are going to resubmit my details so hopefully it will all get sorted out. But its also meant that ive had to SORN my bike as I cant get to a Post Orrofice untill the weekend!

There was no need to SORN your bike. You can pretty much get away with no tax for a full month as long as you purchase before the end of a month and the police will only give you a producer as long as you're polite to them. I've done it plenty of times through being completely disorganised in the past!!

Not had any probs Neil doing both of mine last month. Also did the Chavvy 106 too.

Your insurer is breaking the law if your details are not online.

Certainly a couple of years ago not all insurers registered every vehicle with the Police database. The same is true of you drive a fleet vehicle, where you (or al employees) are insured as the driver, rather than the vehicle.

Perhaps all insurers have to register all vehicles these days, but I can't see how this would be practicable with the size of some fleets.

In my car, I carry a copy of the company insurance certificate in case of an accident. I've had to show it to the Police in the past too. I don't mind doing this. Some of the estimates of the numbers of uninsured vehicles on the roads are terrifying.

I've just tried to use the on line vehicle tax service, both biles i'm insuring are on the same multibile policy.....the DVLA site recognizes one of my bikes, but no the other! Is that odd or what!
Looks to me like the DVLA has a problem, based on the comments on the thread plus my experiences tonight.!!

well my bike is off the road now for the big winter clean, so i will come back to this.

With all the problems that DVLA has had over the last few years, including losing driver details, i'm gonna carry on using the village post orafice for as long as i can to tax both my car and the bike.
There were several peices in the MCN a few months ago, about people that had passed their bike test years ago (like me) and DVLA had lost their details, so they had to re-take their bike test,`cos DVLA had no proof that they had ever passed in the first place!!

...and the guy who runs Donnington who got his licence back without the bike entitlement...but can now drive HGV vehicles!!

The DVLA database sometimes takes a while to update

I had a few problems re-insuring my van a while ago. We got new insurance cover but details didn't get updated in time, so I had to go to the post office to re-tax it. Other than that it's been fine for bike & trike.
