New Monster 796 ABS owner
Hi everyone,
I picked up my beautiful pearl with/red frame, 2013, 748 mile, Monster 796 ABS last night so I thought I’d just say hello before I pick your brains on some upgrades & modifications. So I’m only one ride in & what a ride, about 60 miles down the A19 & A1 in 40-50 mph cross winds & rain. But my 5’11” frame was comfy on the bike & she took it all in her stride, so I’m looking forward to my next ride in some calm dry sunny weather. So I have a few mods in mind; • Evotech tail tidy (will order today). • Some crash bungs for the frame & front axle. • Some end cans – thinking SC Project Carbon Oval. • Some bar end mirrors – thinking Oberon 3” diameter. One thing I noticed on the first ride was the gearing. As I neared the end of my motorway journey I realized I was in 5th gear. At 80 mph going up into 6th dropped the rev’s to approx. 4000 rpm & the motor was very lumpy, she was much happier at 5000 rpm or above where the motor was sweat. I also have a 2009 Aprilia RSV Mille R & when I got that 6th gear was obsolete for 90% of my riding, so the final drive was dropped by one tooth on the front sprocket & upped by two teeth on the back. So any feed back on the gearing of the Monster would be welcome. Any advice on running the bike & especially on my proposed mods would be greatly appreciated although I’ll post on the specific forum place in due course. 6th really is an overdrive on these bikes. I never really used it on the 1100 because it needed 100 plus to be worth it. You won't save much fuel either. All those bits are good stuff.
Oh and welcome too. Nice colour choice. That's the matt white right. How easy is that to clean then

Hi RIchard and welcome to the UKMOC.
You have the best monster in my opinion . I've had my 796 for six months now and ham loving it.My mods have been Ducati tail tidy,Termi race cans, Acerbis hand guards and like you am thinking of bar end mirrors . On the subject of the bikes gearing ,I've seen on the site that people have mixed views, some go down a tooth on the front but some have reverted back to the normal set up !! I must admit my 6th gear has not had much use in 4 k miles . |

80mph, 3rd gear! Change gear around the 7k rev mark. That's nearer its peak power and peak torque. At least on mine, though it has been remapped. But that wouldn't make much difference.

Welcome to the club and Monster ownership.
You've got a good list of mod's lined up and I'm sure it'll be lots of fun. Listen to Jonzi if you want to do stuff, he's had his 796 for a while now.
