S4R - fine on idle but not when opened up

Just got this S4R, it’s running termis of the bladder, pretty standard 6k on the clock usual wear and tear.

I just came back from the workshop where the mechanic who was about to compete the belt service has given me possible some very bad news.

When you open up the throttle at the top end the bike does make a typically louder noise than usual, no banging or clanking but a deeper note as it rev’s.

He said engine - f#^**d which obviously is terrible to hear. But to be honest when I first heard it sounded fine and my initial thoughts were it’s just a loud twin as usual.

I know it’s not a lot to go on, I’m pretty stressed about it so looking for anyone to give some guidance (PS the seller is been very cool about it and we are talking)

Airbox/lid loose? Intake manifolds leaking?

I am not 100% convinced that the mechanic was on the money with the diagnosis. Although he has worked on Dukes before it is a small family workshop that does general services on all makes. Obviously he knows more than me!! But I also know each Ducati has its own little idiosyncrasies and issues.

So telling you the engine is Donald ducked is his diagnosis? Sounds a bit of a Joker to me, what was he doing revving the tits off it for a belt change anyway?
More and better quality info needed!

Both my S2R and 748R are quiet (well relatively quiet-ish) at low revs.
Run up the revs and the S2R has an impressive induction noise (oddly the S2 is probably overall noisier of the two).
Likewise the 748, over about 5K and it gets very loud, at 10K it's impressive. It's the same general series motor as the S4's run and has got a much smaller air box so I'd expect similar at lower revs..
I'd figure a deep roar is the induction tract.

Anyone with a S4 in the area with thoughts on this?

That’s all I have at this point as they’ve shut up shop for Xmas. On a good note the seller has agreed to trailer it to his Ducati place in Jan for an inspection. If it is doomed then we’ll sort something out.

Hopefully this is all a mistake, I’m just sh#%^^g myself as I can’t addord to write off the money.

I have an S4 tuned engine so its more power than standards , almost to s4r spec and when opened up at 10k revs it sound like hell is coming ,, induction roar, engine whine and clatter , chain noise, exhaust roaring ,, but its in perfect nick and its done 40k miles get it looked at by a duke expert , its probably ok

Track Slob down and ask him to have a look/listen to it.

The water cooled engines produce more noise the harder they are rev'ed up the taco'.
A second option from an experienced Ducati mechanic would be the best move.
As Rollo suggested, have a word with slob, or take the bike to an independent Ducati specialist work shop. E.G. Ray Petty or Rosso Corse.

Get the ECU checked. The 59M ECUs have tendency to fry. The bike idles OK, in slow motion you feel like it's misfiring and when you get on the throttle it revs up to about 7K, won't rev higher and has no power.

If it's the ECU then source 5AM ECU and send me PM and I will email you the S4R map for Termis and open air box and point you where you can get shareware software and cables to flash the ECU.
