Hello from London!

Hello all!

New member here. I've been idling these forums for the past couple of months trying to find a used s2r 800 or 1k and I've finally got it !

I bought an 07 silver S2r 1000 from another forum member (willber) and even though I've only got it for two days and I haven't managed to get it out of the city for a proper drive I already love it. This is my first Ducati and coming from an NC700 this is quite an upgrade for me.

I'm also interested in learning the basics of motorcycle maintenance so I'm looking for part-time courses in or around North London that are reasonably priced. Any recommendations are welcome.

Looking forward to interacting more with everyone on the forums!

Hi and welcome.

For courses I did an excellent Beginner's and Intermediate Motorcycle Maintenance Course at Hackney Community College in Shoreditch. It was £120 for 10 weeks on each module (one evening a week, 6.30-9pm), Beginners is basic servicing and checks, mainly working on your own bike, Intermediate, they have a bunch of wrecks for you to go and break. Mohon and Charlie the tutors are great, Mohon has a sports bike background, Charlie is an Adventure Bike guy. Charlie also described my 695 as "that lovely Ducati"

Otherwise for something more speedy, Oval Motorcycle Centre do a Basic Maintenance Course on a Tuesday evening, Matt there is great.

I didn't come out of the course feeling like Alex Briggs, but I feel a bit more comfortable tackling the smaller jobs myself, I recently changed the tank on my bike, and carried out a service, with only a little assistance at Oval.

It'll be lots of fun for you to be out and about on it.
The slow commuter speeds in London may lead you to change (if its not been done already, the front drive sprocket from a standard 15 tooth, to a 14 tooth sprocket. That really helps

Welcome along.
Its a nice looking monster and, with the 1000cc engine, should do everything you require.

You will find that the two-valve engine monsters, like your S2R, are particularly nice to work on.
Access is particularly good (key to remove seat, flick the tank latch and you're straight into the heart of the beast).
Don't use the std tank prop for anything other than emergencies though ... they're not very reliable and they tend to cause stress on the tank hinge, which the steel tanks don't like.
Instead use a length of wood to prop the tank up off the airbox.
The most tricky jobs are valve shims and, in your case, probably chain adjustment with the single sided swingarm (which needs special spanners and lots of torque ... so they tell me).
But just about everything else is a breeze and well within the capabilities of a beginner mechanic.

Thanks a lot for the suggestions everyone! I've seen the courses from Oval and I've registered already for the next one (which is in September). I'll look into the other courses mentioned here as well and see if there's anything available starting September onwards.
