Hi,
I've just bought my first Monster, a 2006 S2R 800.
I bought it "blind" on line (not ebay) as its about 200mls away and a bit far to go and tyre kick. Its described as unmarked and with only 8000 miles and a full service history including recent timing belts and tyres, I thought "what could possibly go wrong?"!
Er, Which is where you come in! I hope!
Anybody know of anything I should be on the lookout for when it arrives?
By the way the reason for my rashness in just buying it, I'm just like that!
Plus, its a red 'un with white wheels and I think i'm going to love it.

Hi m8 my 1st monster was the s2r 800. great bike and i loved it!
I found with mine that it was rusting rather fast espesh the chain and rear sprocket and alot of the nuts and bolts but apart from that it was fine until someone scuttled me and wrote it off;(

Hi.. oh heck another one!
I did the same was told not to.. but when a lowered one came up at not bad a price i hit that button... reflex thingmy!

ok.. you can read about mine under M600 dead on electrics!!

I am a bit of a noggin..
collected bike chaps a lovely guy .. but I think the previous owner had mistreated the bike and been playing silly buggers with it.
Kept it on the road with little knowledge.

not to put you off.. yours may be fine!!

riding home twang... ohh my brake!! crikey that brake lever has dropped low!!
ouch bit bumpy (had a short hagen shock on it)...

pulled up for petrol ..ohh look it died!!
after giggling about got some lights and off I went... got home 200mile trip

hmm what the ****ens.. oil leak! lol

then bike died... !!

RAC'D it up to top bloke Carl Harrison ..
wrong cover on engine.. hence leak
shorting electrics and knackered relay
shock was bottoming out not adjusting properly.. i liked pretty purple shock!!
various things hanging off as someone had been playing with stuff!!..

new engine cover , electrics sorted and shock exchanged to a nice stiff one..
bikes a gud un although he said keep an eye on it as you can get rogue monsters!!
I think he thought id hate the bike.. but I loves it!!
oh I changed the belts to be on safe side!!

its a case of some are ok some arnt .. and you pays your money and fingers crossed!!
My mechanic said never buy a bike off that site!

try and source one through here.. I must say if I did change bikes I would enquire through this site first.

may be worth getting it looked at or given the once over by a specialist.. I would and glad I did even though I only have the little base model..

for peace of mind.. some people are not as forthcoming as others shall we say!!.. well not until pressed!!

My friend sold a bike on the bay and when I read it sounded great.. yep was a fab bike but I knew it had a few niggly problems that may come to light... but had been omitted.
Me when I sold my pile of .. ER5 was ultra honest... didnt pay off mind lost £700 on the bike .. and some iffy sorts have taken it out of the country..

id say get it down to someone for the quick once over .. may save bigger problems arising!
Then again you may have grabbed a real gem!
ebay you win some you loose some..

Hi, Thanks for the posts, The S2R didnt pass the "bounce test" then Arbeia?!! Hope you faired slightly better. I was nerfed off a Jota once (wrote an escort off, but only bent one fork leg on the big Lav!) put me in a hospital bed with a little white tent over my legs for a fortnight though!
Hi he11cat, I didnt get it off the bay, but an on line advert. I've bought bikes from ebayers before and generally not had a problem, I think the more experienced you are the less likely you are to fall into a trap. I'll certainly check for rusting though.
Anyone know why there's a 2 year time limit on belts? car belts seem to last a lot longer and even final drive belts on harleys and GPZ305's seem to last yonks. Kevlar Belts in machine apps last for ever, some with huge stresses like printing presses, guillotines etc..
Any Ideas?, apart from the obviou$ that i$!!

Welcome to the club!

Most people will do the belts at the 12,000 or 12 month point which ever comes first.

But i run open belts and just watch them as they go round and round and round.

The two years is because the belts run on faily small toothed wheels so get a lot of flexing. They probably will last a lot longer BUT......
If you do get a problem and one does snap you have to remember that the valve train will keep spinning as there are no springs to stop it and the piston is also moving up and down which means very expensive crunching noises as they meet . Ducati's don't have 'safe' heads like many jap bikes.
Given the cost of belts it's easier and safer to change them.

As it's had a service you've got a year or more before they need doing again.

Most important is keys, one red and a black or two (two's best) and a card with a code sequence.

Critical is actually using the monster, they get better with use so you are obliged to get out on it as much as possible

Im afraid im a mere female and no mechanic!!

but id do your belts ..
just to be on safe side!!!..

mine was ok .. until 200miles lol!!.
I did have my belts done as was advised to by someone in the know... its a good precaution.
other then that go enjoy

Just read He11cats tale. He11cat you should have a column! Describing those Harleys as Pikeys caravan's is pure class!!
I surely intend to start wearing out the tyres on the thing when I get it, I've never been one of the tea-van crew, a blast to the caff an' back seems such a waste when there's the whole of Wales and the west country on my doorstep. (not to mention Spain and Morocco a mere ferry ride away!) I wouldn't knock it though, at least its out and about on a bike - which beats just about anything else you can do without a rubber mask and a bottle of baby oil!

Ok, Ok I know the bikes weren't Italian but they were all grand adventures. Anyone else have some similar stories up their sleeves for whiling away the tedium waiting for the next time you can get out?
