My new M1000 Sie
If you've seen my thread on Random Chat, you'll know I was looking for a replacement for my 620ie, and I found this one sort of locally... only about 170 miles away. The seller's description was overly accurate, which gave me a lot of confidence, so I put an offer in and said I'd go up today to collect.
When I got there, the bike looked better than I thought. I'm unsure if the SE on the tank means its a special edition, or if that's just a play on the Sie? It seems to have an aluminium tank, and the carbon bits form the Sie are all present and correct. It's got a Power Commander, and the Remus/Ducati Performance cans (which are quieter than the SP Engineering ones on the 620!), and the top of the airbox has been chopped off. There's a Dyno print out which shows it makes 87.49hp and 68.78ftlbs at the rear wheel. Luckily, I'd taken the train, and my riding gear, so paid the price then had a great run home via the A93 through Braemar and down over Glenshee. The 620 is great around town and up to 50mph, but beyond that, I felt as though it needed pushed a bit, especially 2-up. The 1000 is much less stressful to make progress on, and can nip past slower cars easier. It takes more to lean it into corners, but it still handles fantastically. Plans for tomorrow are to remove the centre stand and to do a tail chop - the tea tray is cracked, so I feel vindicated for do this... plus it looks a zillion times better. I'm also going to remove the bar risers as the current position puts my head right in the buffeting zone from the bikini fairing. Overall, I'm well chuffed. |

You've got a real cracker there, Sam, especially if it does have one of the rare and fabled aluminium tanks! I like the S2R inspired paintwork too.

Re the tail chop, I wouldn't recommend, esp living in Scotland. Your back ends up covered in filth even if it's only slightly wet. Bike looks nice and standard - leave as is IMO, it will be worth more when it comes to sell.

She looks lovely.
Glad I'm not making that decision on the tail chop. I did mine as it looks sooooo much better, but yours is even rarer than mine. I suggest like me you just keep the bit of frame you cut off as it can always be welded back on. If it was me, considering the above, I'd do it. Nasher.

I can understand wanting to get rid of a plain plastic tea-ray as they aint the prettiest!
But you can get carbon ones which really do show off the rear end. Swap the number plate illuminator for a little LED and save a couple of pounds at the same time. I couldn't be without mine, a handy shelf to plonk things on when your hands are full..

Ahh that age old question and fuel of much debate…… to chop or not to chop?
I’m normally a ‘poop or get off the pot’ kind of person but as Mr G has touched upon there are other options like a kind of ‘halfway house’ of junking all the unnecessary plastics and adding a little carbon. Here’s mine on my ‘97 900 (definitely handy for putting that cuppa on): And for later bikes (if you can find one):

My last one had it done, and I much prefer it. I'm not really bothered about riding in the rain to be honest, so it's unlikely to be an issue that I worry about getting wet… if that happens, I’m going straight home anyway.
I’d planned to keep all of the bits, and either some lugs and grub-screws can be made up to re-fit it, or it can be re-welded. I’m really not a fan of the tea tray - it was a means to an end to get the bike legal, but doesn’t fit with the concept design intent. |

Are you sure about an Aluminium tank?!
It looks like a stock steel one from an ‘03/‘04 bike, do you have a magnet handy? |
