S4R on a S2R 800 midpipe

I just picked up a set of Ducati performance midpipe that is part number 979A00103. The catalogue for the 800 is 979A00105. Now I tried to see if the front pipe would work but it looks like it’s about 6 inches too long to connect to the short header pipe. I’m looking at my options now but it looks like I’m going to have to cut one of them. I’m probably going to have to do the same to the rear cylinder pipe but not sure yet. I originally read that the S2R 800 and S4R midpipe are similar or the same and the only thing that changes is the short header. Anyone else have this issue?

Thanks in advance
Sandro

When I fitted an Arrow system to my S2R 1000, I found out that their de-cat link pipe was the same for both the S2R 800 and the S4R/RS. So I would have expected that a pipe that fitted one model should also fit the other.

Having said that, however, and, as you've already observed, the Ducati Performance pipes do have different numbers, despite outwardly appearing similar. Perhaps they have different bores at some point along their length?

I’m pretty sure funkatronic had DP S4R mid-pipes on his S2R800 but had noted that 07 bikes had a different pipe to 05/06 bikes

Thanks for the diagram. I’m going to get my calipers out and measure them. From what I see I might have to cut both front and rear midpipes and have to get the an Exaust shop open up them with a mandrel. I saw I have enough metal on the forward cylinder just have to check the rear one. I’d rather cut the midpipe instead of the stubby headers so I can reinstall the factory one.

That difference is AFAIK just about a hole for the lamda/O2 sensor. 2007 S2R was a Euro 3 bike and had the sensor. At least until removed by of the DP kit.

I think you may have put your finger on it, slob. The S4R/S2R have the same "udder" part no. up to and including 2006. The S4R one changes for 2007.

Sandro, do your headers have the twin outlet ports as in the above diagram or are they the later single large oval outlets?

It only has the one big one. I don’t have a O2 sensor on mine. Looking at the diagrams they both look the same but I think mine is different. I had read a Testastretta s4R could be different but why would they use the same part number for that? After I measure everything tomorrow I’ll see if I should just bring it to my mechanic and have him do it. He has a Exaust guy that should be able to do it. I’m waiting on the gaskets for the headers. I’ll stop by when I pick them up this week.

That's probably why the pipe doesn't fit, Sandro. The dual outlet S4R shares pipework with the S2R but the later oval outlet model has its own pipe. The different part nos. for the earlier S2R/S4R DP pipes possibly refers to lambda sockets as suggested by stopintime. Perhaps there wasn't a DP link pipe for the 2007 model as it was only around for a couple of years.

A quick internet search reveals a Spark decat pipe, which fits both the S2R and 996 S4R up to 2006. They make a specific decat pipe solely for the 2007 998 S4R (with the oval outlets)...

No mine is round and not oval. I’ll get some photos tomorrow. The pipe just seams much longer. Imm measure tomorrow from when it bolts up to the end of the header. That should tell me what I’m dealing with.

Great news they are identical!

So today I went to see what I needed to do the make the midpipe fit and when I went under the bike I saw that I was wrong. It looked like it was the correct one! So of course I put the calipers away and after an hour I have a new midpipe and a bike that now sounds like a proper Ducati again! I was lucky the Exaust gaskets weren’t bad so I reused them. But since it’s a two piece Exaust it will be a lot easier the replace them. I have to saw what a difference it makes on midrange and my neighbors came outside to see what all the noise was! While I was at it I removed the passenger pegs and really like the looks! Now I’m just waiting on a flashed Ecu that removes the immobilizer and has the DP map in it! Here are some photos.

Well done! The S2R looks so much better without the cat, doesn't it?

Because of the thread title, until I saw your photos, I'd thought you were trying to fit an S2R 800 link pipe to an S4R, not the other way round! So, if any of my posts didn't make sense, that's why!

Yes. They came on the bike when I got it. I was thinking of changing them to real termi’s but I like the look better and they sound great. I made a video but I’m not sure how to put it on here. It’s on my Facebook page. Alessandro DiCicco

If you upload it to YouTube, then you can include it in your post by inserting the last part of the video web address (immediately after the =) between "YTB" square brackets i.e [YTB]insert partial address here[/YTB]

E.g. If the YouTube address is https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MwY7HOZv7Eo

then put this in your post

[YTB]MwY7HOZv7Eo[/YTB]

and the video will appear in your post.
