Another Bloody Newb!!
I thought i'd better say hello before I get posting, so hello. I'm not new to bikes, in the past I've owned a Bandit 600, Bandit 1200, Yam R6, Yam R1 then an Aprilia Mille in that order. Admittedly its been a while since I've been on a bike thanks to coming off the Aprilia and smashing myself to bits but like any addiction you never fully beat it so I'm toying with getting a S4 or maybe an S4R if my funds allow.
Thats it really for now, like I said I thought I'd introduce myself before I start posted stupid questions and generally bugging you all. |

Welcome!
If you can, go for the S4R, much better motor and more up to date. If you're not hell bent on a 4 valve, try a 1000DS version either in a Monster 1000 or an S2R 1000, it's a great motor

Test ride a couple of Monsters before you buy, you might be supprised how well the S2R goes + the added bonus of cheaper insurance & easier / cheaper maintenance.

Hi there. I was like you - always been a big supersports fan, had a couple of Blades, CBR6's, a Vmax and recently - like, 6 weeks ago I bought the new 2008 R1. However I decided I wanted something different and test rode nearly every Ducati you could bar a 1098 which I didnt want. I loved them all but was struck on a monster, and between the S4R and the S2R - I got my S2R last monday. S4R is of course brilliant - but consider what you really want - if you are coming away from sport bikes you are probably doing it for more than one reason - the S4R is a sport bike, in a monster body so not too different from the mille (but a lot more stylish! hehe). I would say test ride the S4R, but also an S2R - I think like another wise member here says - the savings you will make in purchase price, and insurance will be 1.5-2K. Somethin you can't discount for only a slight difference in power - after all, you cant "easily" ride a monster at S4R 130mph plus anyway. I stuggle to hang on to my S2R at a hundred! haha. Good luck - and IM sure which ever you choose you will love - and changing from Japs to my Italian monster is the best biking move I have made in owning 9 bikes. |

The S2R is Ducati's best kept secret when it comes to people abandoning jap sports bikes for a naked bike.
I did the same thing after owning 3x Fireblades, in todays big-brother UK, whats the point of a sports bike? Unless you use it for trackdays, it just isn't fun to ride at legal (ish) speeds. Mine makes me smile everytime I ride it & I don't feel the need to do silly speeds, the real fun starts on a twisty A or B road & using the fat mid-range torque of the Duke to power out. |

1.5 - 2k for insurance, have i read that right!!!!!! I got quoted just under £400 for an S4 yesterday by Bennetts. But I fully understand what everyone is saying about the S2R, the only problem with that is that I'm a bit of a flash/material tosser who has to have the best of what ever I get, if I'm being honest. Not sure I'd be happy with an S2R and knowing that there is a better model out there, don't get me wrong I'm sure its a very capable bike and virtually every bit as good as the S4R in the real word!
Anyway, another bike has come into the equation but I don't really want to talk about that on here, it'll probably get me an instant ban. Cheers for the warm welcome and friendly advice peeps |

I'd love to but the main problem is justifying the cost to my rational, level headed (read as tight!) wife, I've already got a daily drive car, weekend car and a jet ski. As for the bike, its down to a new S?R depending on a test drive and another bike that I shouldn't mention on a Ducati forum. I'm gonna look at second hand prices prices of the S4RS and Tricolore but I've got a feeling that I wont be soiled for choice with those on the used market.
