What's inside a WSB engine?
If you're a bit of a desmo nerd, (like me), you might find this video interesting. It compares the engine internals of Troy Bayliss's 2006 WSB 999 with its road-going cousin.
Check out the ridiculous profiles on the race cams at 4:15 (Oh, and it looks like Toine is a fan of Jerry's too!) |

Very interesting, especially the service schedule stuff. I remember reading MCN around ‘06, where they estimated servicing Lavilla’s BSB bike had needed around £0.5M worth of servicing to win the championship.
I’d always figured I’d call a trackday ~1K miles for servicing purposes, where Biggelaar reckon I should have been calling it ~2K miles. My 1000DS is showing over 80K on the clock, I’ve done 2 full rebuilds including 2nd hand crank, rear head and rings. Plus a couple of new clutches. I actually reckon it’s done ok considering the abuse I’ve given it. |

I think that the maintenance schedule (and its cost) was never sustainable and was very bad for the sport. BSB and WSB
BSB and WSB need privateers and they need them to be approaching competitive with the "works" teams, fans need the heroic underdog otherwise it is processional. BSB has reigned back costs and is a lot better for it. But they could do more still. Why do they permit qualifying tyres that last one and possibly two laps? The extra grip they provide needs suspension and set up changes and as far as the race is concerned has nothing to do with actual race pace. The same applies to MotoGP - why have qualifying tyres.- the race is run on control tyres with maybe 2 or 3 dry compounds and intermediates or wets depending on circumstances. |
