I think if I see something that may be interesting to others on the forum I will continue to post it.
If it is eBay/gumtree there will be thousands of potential purchasers so the possibility of collusion between 2 forum members to the disadvantage of the seller is surely not an issue as the sale price will be the sale price determined by the thousands, not the 2.

If I was selling anything Monster related I would put it on here first, at a price below an eBay price simply because if someone is interested they are more likely to be a genuine buyer and that is worth something, less likelihood of a scam or total timewaster.

Unless I have a connection, I will always state "no connection" and people can read the ad and make their own judgments about the quality or otherwise of the article for sale. In this instance, a forum member has probably saved another forum member from making an expensive mistake - a benefit of a community. I do feel slightly concerned that in this instance I flagged up a dog but in future, I will put an appropriate disclaimer so that everyone knows that caveat emptor applies.

Well that's a sort of happy ending, if not quite an ending yet?

The seller did give an honest appraisal from what he knew in the first place and has made a good response to the folk from this club who gave him more information. It's a good example of friendly people policing.

However whether or not the mains or big ends are faulty or have been replaced is still not known for sure and I think £1500 is still a bit rich for a bike with potentially a lot of work needed. Bottom end failures are usually due to a lubrication failure and that would effect the rest of the engine and gearbox to some degree also.
I would be trying to contact the previous owner to try and establish if the work had been done or not and by whom, that would be a whole new ball game.

It does have nearly 40k on it, should the mains last longer than that on those? Like you say maybe it's some other lubrication issue, crank journals big ends etc. I agree £1500 is still a lot more a potential money pit.

I should hope so.

My 916 (basically the same bottom end etc.) has over 50k on it and, as far as I can tell no sign of any bearings letting go.

There I've done it now, expecting engine to implode imminently - kiss of death and all that...

No sign of any rumbling or knocking yet..

Hoping to more than double that figure.

Our local Ducati independent has several customers whose Ducatis have sailed past the 100,000 mark with no bother and keep on going.

Doesn't have radial master cylinders, they are axial.
