clutch question

I've recently noticed that the clutch is getting a bit grabby and the changes feel clunky, also the thrust plate no longer stops spinning when the lever is pulled in.

I'm thinking I may need new plates...

If so, where sells them? I've done an internet search and most sites for a '98 M900 seem to be in the US and start at around £280.

I have read on here the stack wants to be no more than 38mm but as of yet I've not had time to remove anything and do some measuring. I will probably need a Ducati tool anyway, which I have not bought or made yet.

Any info would be appreciated.

Its sounds as if the clutch is not disengaging properly, not enough movement to lift the pressure plate away from the pack. It may just need fluid change/bleeding. If it were worn then the opposite would be true, there would be too much lift and it would slip.

Ah right, I'll give it a fluid change and see how it feels. Thanks for the info, it makes perfect sense what you say.

If changing the fluid doesn't sort it, take a look at the slots in the basket to see if the edges of the clutch plate tangs have dug in?
If that is the case, you may be able to dress the edges to provide free movement, or you may need to change the basket as well as the plates.
Hopefully it's just the fluid.

You should be able to turn the pressure plate by hand with a little resistance, when you pull the lever, with the engine off of course!

I will be trying all these ideas later. I am also hoping the fluid change is the answer, pretty sure a new clutch might have to wait a while as bike cash is pretty light at the moment.

Hi Wasta I've used this guy in Spalding he supplies Newfren plates I think about £60 as you will already have your steels Not saying the ones in the link will fit your bike but he's your man as all the other ones on eBay are mainly from Germany.

I am just about to order theses ones. You could clean the plates as well just to make sure it is not just dust.

Newfren plates are good, I've got them in my M900 and 916 with no problems - But they are aluminium which is fine if the basket is also aluminium? but if it's got a steel basket then they won't last long - in which case you need steel plates, or replace the basket at the same time.

I fitted Ferodo (steel) clutch plates last year & once I got the stack height right they have perfomed well with no issues. I recall they were also slightly cheaper than Newfren.

Bled the clutch tonight and all seems well again. I'll take it for a run tomorrow and see if all is well on the road.

I adjusted the chain as well, 22mm socket to undo the axle, but when I checked the torque settings in the Haynes manual it gave settings for 18mm or 25mm nuts. Did Ducati mix and match or has someone bodged an odd one in?

The size relates to the axle diameter, later bikes had a larger 25mm axle.
