Mmmm Dd, you are right.
I'd not noticed it, and I can't compare it to my M900 as it doesn't have that tube because of the suspension layout difference.

I'll have to have a look and see if there is any other evidence of it being welded elsewhere.

The paint on the frame looks standard, and not mucked about with.

This bike gets more and more interesting!

It does look standard, maybe I was being a bit facetious about the bodge aspect but it's fair to say that Ducati's welding on the trellis frames leaves a lot to be desired on the aesthetic front.

Seems odd that there is a join there though, unless it's to incorporate a bend in the frame? - could have been neater though...

Obviously being worried I 'took a break' from work and popped out to have a look

It does appear to have 3 welds that look 'odd'



But, having done a quick search online I've found 3 other examples that have the welds, although some do appear not to have them.

I'm guessing it was what we'd call in the Aviation industry a 'Production Easement' to make the frame easier to put together, which is why some don't have it, possible earlier ones, and some do.

My '02 S4 has the same although the bottom one of mine looks a lot neater than the one on yours. More like the pic Lud posted

There's another odd looking one on each side by the grab rails where a smaller diameter tube has been welded in and there's part of an open end of the larger tube, on each side.

Nasher, just been out to the garage, checked my 2004 model year 1000Sie - same welds on mine, also look as if the work was given to one of the factory apprentices. Mine came via a similar route to yours, from a dealer who put in on eBay as a no-reserve auction, largely due to a clutch that sounded like all four horsemen of the Apocalypse at full tilt. I got a bag of nuts, bolts and washers from Germany (eBay again) that came from breaking another M1000, if you need a spacer or odd fastener pm me, I might have one. Good luck with the project, looking forward to following it.

I wouldn't say it was a production easement. If you look you can see that between the welds is a quite complicated shaped piece that carries the suspension rocker pivot and changes the tube directions. Far better to use a pre-formed part there and then utilize straight tubes to join it all up.. It rather reminds me of the large cast lugs from the pre welded frame days which where brazed onto tubes to make a frame, As I think bicycles probably still are?

That said it would probably have been a bit sweeter if the bottom tube was longer and met the V joint?

It's from the ST2/4 frames, I noticed it on dacs bike last year when we were out for a little ride.

There's the odd minor mark/scratches from fitting bar clamps, most of which I doubt will show when fitted anyway.

You've probably got this already, Nasher, but for anyone still using aerosols, I'd recommend these. I got one last year and won't be going back to the cans. More controllable and the refills are much cheaper than aerosol equivalents.

You are quite right that Aerosols are so expensive by volume.

I have an Apec pump similar to the Wurth one, but probably won't last as long, and buy my Brake cleaner in 5l containers from a local motor factors. Most trade counters sell it that way.
I think I pay @£11 for the 5l

I don't know how anyone survives without copious quantities of Brake cleaner around the place!
At @£7 for a 500ml spray can it's an expensive habit, hence my finding a cheaper dealer in Bulk.

I sometimes even use it to clean brake discs before fitting them.

Didn't get a lot of progress over the weekend because of other things needing doing.

But got my pair of fully adjustable Showas in the front along with a Carbon Mudguard.





I mentioned how much muck and truck was behind the front sprocket cover.
This is it after I'd dug some out whilst getting the chain and Sprocket off.

Oh, and I'm sorry, I just couldn't resist doing a tail chop as it looks so much better.
It's not an early frame, and I've kept the bit I took off so I could always weld it back on.
