New member new bike

Hi Guys,
Just bought myself a m900

Its a 1998 with 11000m on the clock and in really nice condition.
Been stood for a couple of years so i have serviced it got a new battery and sorted the alarm out and emptied the tank and added new fuel.
Now all the electrics all seem fine and the bike fired over well enough checked for spark seems ok.No smell of fuel on the plug.
So i removed the carbs thinking it was probably varnish etc in them.
The carbs looked remarkably clean and i also noticed no fuel in the bowls?
So my question js do the carbs need to be primed after being stood so long? Is it the vacuum pump? i believe it was running ok before being stood.
One other query i have should there be a fuel tap on the bike as the manual i have pre 1996 shows one but there is not one on the bike.

Sorry for all the questions but need to get a feel for these Italian creations.

Hi and welcome!Fuel tap has been discontinued on later carbed monster. Usual suspects are the fuel filter (under the tank) and crap in the bottom of the tank. Also check the vacuum pump pipes for split/cracks. Pumps don't normally fail, and are quite easily checked anyway. I have a working one available if that turns out to be the culprit thought.
After having the bike standing for so long is a must that you change the belts, this are £35 posted from most dealers ( I use motorapido, they have an excellent next day delivery service) or you could have a major head failure if they go.

Take Pomps advice as he has one and does a lot to it. I used to have a m900 and yes they go well and handle great as long as the rear shock is good. They tend to wallow if not and you will soon see. Sounds like carbs gunked up and I see threads that they sometimes need two stripdowns. Check in the search tab for specific questions and dont be afraid to ask. There are guys like Slob , Kato who strips engines down for fun and AK the doctor plus all the other knowledgable guys on the site.

Hi, fellow M900 owner
There's a thread in the M900 section with cheaper alternatives to standard parts listed, fuel filter is in there.
If your bike has been stood for a while then there maybe fuel residue blocking the jets but it should still fire up but will run lumpy.
If the carbs are empty they can take a while cranking over to pump enough fuel to fire up. sometimes it could be a full minute.
try giving it longer turning over.
if that doesn't work then its new fuel filter and carb strip time.

I forgot to mention I changed the fuel filter. Should a 1998 monster have a fuel tap as this one doesn't?
I am going to try to fill the carb bowls first before trying to start it again.
