Take a bike, that already has more power than you can use, then add more.

Having ridden a M1200S in sport mode and realising that if I owned one it would spend most of its time trying to fire me into the scenery I'd hate to imagine what a +160bhp Monster would be like. As JP said, more power than you can use, but as Kawasaki's H2 has shown by its popularity you can never have too much power unless you actually want to go faster in something other than a straight line.
I guess Ducati felt they needed something to replace the Streetfighter 1098 and to compete with the Aprilia Tuono, BMW K1300R, KTM 1290 Super Duke R and MV Agusta Brutale 1090RR. They've obviously realised that the Monster brand was stronger than the Streetfighter brand. |

I would have one purely for the R factor, but depends how special they actually make it. Hopefully it's properly tricked out rather than just a tad more power and some carbon

Well, it'll probably be a transplant of the 1200 DVT engine from the Multistrada, which is 160 bhp and with very mild manners are the lower end of the rev-range.
I seem to remember even Il Presidente said he wouldn't mind one of those engines

It needs magnesium everywhere, carbon bodywork, super duper desmosedici forks and 200bhp. Then I'll order one |

Is there any chance they'll make something Monsterlike for mere mortals and old duffers like me? The choice appears a little limited....

You are almost certainly correct. The DVT engine is the future for Ducati as it is capable of meeting all current and known future emissions regulations.

You can stop right there.
Over the years we've seen Ducati being pretty clever with the use of their engine blocks, using the same unit across a number of different bikes. It makes complete manufacturing sense, and lowers costs. Which means if there's a new 1299 block in the Superbike, it'll appear at some point down the range, and so on and so on.
