Shock change

I've hit a problem with my shock replacement. The bottom bolt appears to long to go back into the mounting holes as it catches the exhaust. I've checked and cutting it down isn't an option. It was a nightmare to remove as it was still in the shocks eye when out far enough to touch the exhaust.

I don't have a garage so am using axle stands and a Jack to hold and raise the bike.

Any solutionsuggestions apart from a drift and a massive hammer??

If I do that I'm sure the bolts will shear. It's a road I don't want to go down

I thought there was a hole in the swinging arm on the right side. So you can feed the bolt in and also get a socket on it with an extension?

It's in. Got Mrs Wasta to jiggle the rear paddock stand while I fiddled with the bolt.
Bike back together and the shock feels great compared to the old one. Just to set the sag etc and a service and belt change.

The bolt was fed through from the other side. I tried it from the off side and it was again just to long.

There is, usually but I recall that some early 851/888 models didn't have this and as such (especially given Ducati's supply problems back in the day) there could well be some 'leftover' parts on early Monsters...

There are on both of mine: early Monsters are quite a while after early 851s.

I removed bolt from offside after dropping the exhaust.
There is a shaped channel on the alloy swing arm on the early monster to engage with the nut flats. The hole allows a long Allen key to be used, but the Allen bolt wiggles out as you lift the shock.
I had removed the top bolt first though, after removing the breather catch tank.

Shock set up, bike serviced, except belts and a short ride to shake down the set up.

It's like having a different bike, so smooth over road i Know well, the bumps were just not there!

Not the best pic of the shock...

Great looking bike. I saw that first pic and did a double take, as I though you were rocking a slick tyre on the back!
