well looking at my Genuine Ducati 1998 parts list does not show O ring on front barrel dowel but it does on the rear ,, the Steine Dienst site parts list show barrel dowel with O rings on both cylinder ,, Haynes show them on both but another downloaded manual I have from FF does not show them on either cylinder ??

I think i will put an O ring in just for my own peace of mind

The dowels in the head are hollow and serve as an oil feed from cylinder to head and so are a potential source of leakage, as such I would fit the 'O' ring. More likely to leak than the oil returns IMO as they are under pressure.

As for the oil feed hole from crankcase to cylinder, the rear has an 'O' ring and the front doesn't, don't know if you could fit one either as there is no 'groove' for it. That said I've had mine apart a few times and it's never leaked there - use threebond on the base gasket.
