The belts are not directional, Vince. The only occasion when that might be important would be if you were removing and refitting used belts, where I think it's good practice to replace them on the same pulleys and in the same orientation as they came off.

For tensioning, while the allen key method, (or 45⁰ twist), will work, why not try the Gates app to check the frequency? I used it on my Android phone and got consistent results using a cheap external mic. http://www.ukmonster.co.uk/monster/s...ad.php?t=59051

As you said put both printed writing the same way around and if you take off use a crayon and the letters f and r. I dont use h and v. I use Pano tuner app it's free. Just pick the belt on its longest run at tdc. Remember to set vertical at its tdc as not the same position for horizontal.
Remember taking belts off and putting back on requires less tension than fitting new.
And ALWAYS ROTATE THE ENGINE ANTI CLOCKWISE YOU DONT WANT TO SHAG YOUR STARTER MOTOR AND ALWAYS ROTATE BY HAND 2 OR THREE TIMES SLOWLY AFTER DOING BELTS TO CHECK YOU HAVE NOT GOT IT WRONG. IF IN DOUBT PAY SOMEONE.
Oh and remove your spark plugs it's easier.
Happy belt changing.
