That lens of yours must have a mud filter on it, you'll have to let me borrow it and take a few photos of mine, Mike!

Magnificent indeed. A feast for the eyes.
I'm no Velo fellow, so I'm not sure what it is. I'm guessing a Viper?
Definitely from a different era, but even then Velocette ploughed their own furrow.
Look at all the chainguards round the primary drive case! A tyre inflator under the tank.
And adjustable rake rear suspension.. What's the effect of moving the shocks forwards and backwards? More progressive towards the front and more load bearing when upright?
Note the chair mounting brackets on the frame. A Velocette with chair fitted is known as a motorpike and sidecarp, due to the fishtail silencer..

Eagle eyes!

You miss nothing Gary!, good spots all round.Pete said it was a real basket case when he bought it.it has a badge on the rear mudguard commemorating the first bike to do over 100 mph.its showing 11k on the clock, that's since he rebuilt it

That's very nicely restored and also properly looked after, after 11000 miles. A credit to Pete.

First Velocette to do over 100mph perhaps? I thought the Brough was the first 100mph production bike?

It was 100 mph for 24 hours at Montherley in France sometime in late 1950s early 1960s

That's the one Richard, the little badge on the rear mudguard stated 1961,

........Pete reset the clock when the rebuild was done, didn't say how many miles it had done previously.

That's quite a stunt, 2400 miles in a day! Not just one rider I hope? I wonder how many of today's bikes would do that?

A Matchless G11CSR (600) did a hundred miles in one hour in about 1958. I think the rider was Bruce Main-Smith, but I can't find anything on the net.

They used a test track, literally during the lunch break. It used the entire contents of the fuel tank and finished on vapours.

Very interested how you set a Smiths odometer back to zero, I'd like to start the Norton from 00000 again after the build.

Reversible battery drill with trigger sensitive speed control on the speedo cable? Probably have to wind it forward or the needle would bend/distort on the stop

Cheers Mike. The bezels unscrew if you're very careful.
A tool needs to be made from metal or wood that fits the bezel perfectly diametrically, then slitted and some means of pinching it devised. Best way for me is to make something shaped a bit like a banjo and slit the "neck" right down the middle to form two handles that can be gripped together... A risky business! As the glass can shatter.

I've already spun the speedo with a drill and cable to see that it works, but I don't think the way forward is to give it a lifetimes wear before I even use it?

I have a "non answer" for you Gary, he sent it to get rebuilt 25 years ago, and he was asked if he wanted it reset......he can't remember who did the work! , there is always Google

Thanks for asking Mike. I figured I would be getting professional help on that one when the time comes, but at the end of the day it's only some numbers and not ever so important.

Noticed the mileage on the Monster after the last ride... No drills involved..
