Battery or Reg/rec?
I’ve got an electrical problem I’d value some advice on. I rode down to London last Friday and back to Birmingham on Saturday morning. I got to within 7 miles of home and noticed the engine lock light (EOBD light) came on.
I stopped to turn the bike off and on again. The engine lock light when off but the bike won’t start. Not enough power in the battery. I’d stopped the engine twice in the past hour and the battery has been a little weak recently. StreetBike came out to help and we jump-started the bike but it died when we removed the jump leads. Once back home I connected the battery to the Oxford Optimate 900 charger I’ve fitted. It took about 18 hours to recharge the battery according to the Optimate. I’m hoping it’s the death of the battery and a simple replacement will solve the problem. However the recovery man said it could be the regulator/rectifier. I have some questions. How do I assess if it’s the battery or the reg/rec? What replacement batteries does anyone recommend? Thanks for any help. Bike is an 2008 S2R 1000, done 5000 miles |

Check the complete charging system, inc battery, reg/rec, alternator and all the associated wiring.
You'll need a cheap multimeter (about £15), and .... http://www.electrosport.com/technica...ng-diagram.pdf A multimeter with diode test facility would be best. |

Just had a similar problems and it turns out the reg/rec had blown it self to bits, check the wires to it, take it off and have a look underneath as mine had a ruddy great hole in it which is a bit of a give away...

I've had a go at using the metre as outlined in the linked post. With the bike running the metre reported only 11.8 volts.
So I've taken it over to JHP for them to sort it out. |

R/Rec blown and battery
Turns out the Reg/Rec had blown. The battery need replacing anyway. JHP did a quick and reasonable price deal with it sorted out in a few days.
