1993 M900- It begins.....

Well, FINALLY started the rebuild! I've had my M900 since 2001 and it's one of the earliest. I used it all the time until I parked it in the garage with 46k on the clock planning to do the chain and sprockets over the coming winter. Erm... then I got married and never got the time to do it... that was 2009...


But last year I was going to get it sorted but got carried away sorting my Monkey bike instead, but now that is completed, except for a working speedo- mine reads 40 at 30mph and is waaaaay off the scale when I get it up to a confirmed real 62mph, and it really won't go any faster than that- but for a 70cc on 8" wheels, I'm not complaining!!

So, last night I got the tools out and started the job which was fun as I need a new allen key set so spent ages finding the right tools, but I'm not in a rush. The bike had been garaged but the past 2 years it has been in my lean to shelter which is open at one end. This year with all the flooding we had for months, it got covered in mould which has not done it much good. I had washed it last summer but it does look pretty manky.

Plans are to remove and paint the engine, and fit al new gaskets in the barrels/heads as well as the valve guide oils seals. I shall also get the valve guides themselves checked while they're off just in case. The rest of the bike needs a good cleaning and frame touching up- I can do a full frame resto another time as I want to ride it asap and I'm planning on moving this summer so it must be running before then- as do the wheels. The carbs have keyholed the brass jets but Dynojet will sell me new ones at £1.50 each. Then hopefully it's just chain and sprockets for now. I notice the neutral light is not working, hopefully this is the bulb as I replaced the switch not long before going off the road, and the throttle cables are tight again so I might as well change them again while I have access. When I disconnected the fuel pip from the filter, the petrol just drained out and would not stop so I guess I don;t have even a vacuum fuel tap. Great. I'll fit some quick disconnect parts instead for the future. The fuel looked clean so hopefully no rust in the tank. I reckon I must have been using Pro FST at the last time and about 10 litres+ came out. Grr...

The finger is being extracted at the moment.

After sulking against the garage wall, scowling at me while I've been doing the Honda she's playing hard to get. The alternator cover has not been off in 15 years, never leaked a drop of oil, not even a hint of a weep, in the last month - covered the bottom of the motor.

WDW beckons....she knows.

Just need to get the paintjob on the lid as well. And a cape...

Yeah! Funny how both our bikes are the same and 'keepers', and of course the fact that you were the first UKMOC member I met back in the day. Blimey, that was YEARS ago!!!

Question- my valve covers etc are a dark anthracite grey, yet the 'books' say they should be black. Is this a typical researcher's error, or does any other 93 bikes have the dark grey covers? Anyone found a good paint match for them? If not, I'll just do them black.

I'm also going to need new inner rubber and outer plastic belt covers if anyone has any as mine have cracked.

Mine (1993) are dark grey too - when I come back from Halfords I might tell you what matches!

I think the 'black' covers and side covers are because the original M900 used the 900SS engine which indeed had black, but I suspect they may have changed the colour on later production runs.

Thanks guys. Oh, and mine is one of the original ones...

Nothing done today but I did get some allen sockets/keys. Feeling really ill today- everything aches and dizzy spinning head with a constant ringing noise. Like flu but without any chest/nasal symptoms. Weird...

Since yours is 1993 and has grey covers, and mine is Aug 1993 and has grey, I checked Fallon's Belt-Drive guide and the Haynes manual.
All the IMAGES of the first runs had the dark grey covers - not black tho' Fallon incorrectly states they were were black.
Even the VisorDown retro review shows a 1993 with grey: http://www.visordown.com/road-tests-...900/14265.html

Hell yeah! I did see a jacket like that. I bet the trousers aren't flared on that suit...


Ok, dark grey covers it is then! Now for a colour match, or close enough...
