Hello i just joined and thought id say hi. I will be doing my DAS next month and will be getting a monster or a z750. Id really like a monster but every one i know says they cost a small fortune to service. Is that the case or is that just what jap bike owners think? Any way i think i wont follow the sheep and get a jap bike that looks the same as every other one. Perhaps i should warn the bank manager though!

Wellcome to the forum willr, I had quote today from Ducati Coventry for 6000 mile service (second one) on my S2R today, £147.71 + VAT, thats far less than it costs to service our car.

Welcome to If you get a bike outside its manufacturers warranty (2 years) it need not be too expensive to service. There are specialist independent garages who can do it, or you can even do most of it yourself.

Go for the Monster Will, the motor is actually simple to work on and most everything is pretty easy to get at. Servicing isn't going to be that expensive, there's probably somewhere pretty local that'll handle it for you unless you want to DIY. Parts aren't as expensive as you imagine as there are shed loads of standard kit up for sale as people mod their bikes.
You can make it more what you want it to be than most UJM's. You want a streetfighter, cafe racer, road racer or even a real track refuge... Hey that'll be a monster under there somewhere. Not as outright fast CC for CC but what you do have is 99% useable with a really sweet power delivery which does mean they are quick. A a big plus Monster owners (the ones here for sure) are a great bunch of people.

Buy a monster cos you'll only regret not buying one later. Even if the service costs are a bit more than a jap 4, it'll only be once a year that you'll worry about it, and the other 51 weeks you'll get more grins per mile than anything else.
You will however have to budget for all the carbon / blingy bits that you will most certainly need... Oh, and welcome to the club !!

Welcome. I wanted a monster when I started, but I got a honda instead. Dull. Got the monster and I've had more fun in two months of ownership than I had in six years with the honda.
The club here is great too and a good reason to buy one IMHO. Whatever, enjoy!

As noone has mentioned it yet, I will - if you are buying new, all 2007 model year Ducatis onwards have 7,500 mile service intervals, which is higher than any of the Japanese bikes, so the costs should typically work out similar or even lower, especially over a 15,000-20,000 mile period for example?
As others have said, if you are buying outside of the warrenty period, then there are plenty of independent specialists who do more than a good job- Ducati fans tend to be passionate about their work... And finally, I'd echo what Blah blah says - it's not the service costs you need to worry about, rather the damgae your wallet will recieve when you see all the accessories and aftermarket bits and bobs you can buy to personalise you bike - and you will! xxx ps. the new Z750 is a nice looking machine mind you... x |

Hey,
I bought a M695 straight after passing my DAS - scared the hell out of me for the first month (the honda 500 i trained/tested on seemed quick until I test drove the monster - oh my god!) The first service was £100 and as JMo points out the service intervals are wide and Ducati have slashed costs on new bikes. But the main thing you'e buying with the ducati is the experience, the sound, the feel... can't recommend it enough! Good luck!!! |

Try to test the Zed + a couple of monsters (say a 695 or S2R) back to back, and that should help you make up your mind. The captain sensible side of you may vote for the Zed But your heart could vote for the monster... I know mine did

welcome to the club mate!
i am new (well a month old) too!! go for the monster, i bought a 695 after considering a bmw F650 (so simple to ride), triumph speed four (for its looks), hornet (upright to get my riding improved) having been on the monster for a month, i find it fiesty but fun and my riding has only improved plus i havent been too scared! which encouraging me even more! |

HI there. Definitely do for the Monster (obviously what all of us would say). If you want to stand out from the crowd and get those admiring looks from other bike owners because you're a Ducatista !

Thanks for the advice. I think im about 80% ducati. But the zed is a really good looking bike. Although i have been offered a K reg 600 monster at a fairly good price. That might just swing it. Its mat black would that make it a dark?

yup, most likely a Dark. They differ from a 'standard' bike by having slightly different suspension. Check the service history and do an HPI. Make sure the servicing is regular and consider the cost of the next service too.
