Oil leak

Hi all,
My 1100evo has developed an oil leak. Looks like it’s coming from the washer on the bottom (return?) hose on the oil cooler.

It started towards the end of a run; which was ‘spirited’ and the road surface was very poor in places.

Yesterday i managed to nip the nut up slightly (maybe 1/8th of a turn). Not had a chance to check it when running yet. Just wondering if I should maybe replace the washer (is it a crush type?) and if anybody has had similar issue.

Mine seems to have a light misting of oil around the fittings, I'm not familiar with the 1100 but would think the setup is the same?

I can't be 100% clear if mine is leaking from the fitting-to-engine or fitting-to-hose interface? As such I will be changing the washers in the fittings and also applying some threebond to the threads (can't hurt) but there are also 'O' rings in the hose fitting that are easy and cheap enough to change.

There's an aluminium washer under the nipple, Ron, (7871011A)

and two o-rings on the oil hose fitting itself.

Ok done a test and provisional results (i’ll do it again to be sure)

Make it look like it’s actually coming from the top oil cooler connection (feed?).

However not actually from the washer/nut/union or such like. It looks like the black (welded?) connection point has failed.

Can this be welded or repaired in anyway or is it a new oil cooler?

Didn't you have a drippy oil cooler problem a few years back, Ron? How did you fix that and could it be a recurrence of the same problem?

If you can trace the leak, is it something that could be patched, at least temporarily, with JB Weld or Liquid Metal? Of course the area would have to be completely clean and oil free to give the putty any chance of taking.

There are lots of places that claim to be able to repair radiators and oil coolers but I've not had any first hand experience. If you've got one nearby, you could have your cooler pressure tested for leaks so at least you'd know if it was the culprit.

Second-hand ones don't seem to come up very often, despite the fact that it's the same part for 796 and 1100 models. There is one on eBay at the moment for £128 but open to offers.

Good memory Lud. It wasn’t an oil leak as such, i think it was oil out a breather pipe or such like due to when i was hit in that accident…never figured out conclusively though.

There is an old thread i found about a little fracture on my upper pipe intake, the bike would’ve been on roughly 6000 miles at that point.

It is that same fracture that looks to be leaking now…only took to 21000 miles for it to happen. I’ll test it again to get a definitive answer (wee bit tricky with neighbors having the bike running for long periods).

Does seem like a new oil cooler is required now though. Or possible repair of some sort.

Looks like a very neat split with enough surrounding material to take a weld.

Might be worth checking out this place, which I believe isn't too far away. I've no idea if they're any good, they just popped up on a Google search.

Question

Confidence booster, Thanks Lud. I’ll contact a couple places and see what they say.

Let us know how you get on, Ron. At least removal and replacement isn't too much of a faff.

Hey guys.
Looking for a bit of advice, my new oil cooler will be here mid week and I’m just doing a bit prep work before hand.

With regards the o-rings (4 off) and aluminium washers (2 off) do they require replacing? Or is it just the washers.

Also I thought i might as well change the oil while I’m here, I’ll definitely need a new copper washer for the sump plug i guess. I also took out the other sump plug (wrong one) right under neath the strainer…that’s got an aluminium washer, replace that too? And the inevitable question ‘what oil?’ Motul 5100?

Thanks again everyone. Much appreciated.

Glad you're almost roadworthy again, Ron. Did you manage to find a used cooler or have you bought new?

If it were me, I'd replace all the crush washers as a matter of course - you don't want to get it all back together only to find you need to take it off again to fix a leaky seal. I think the o-rings should be OK, just inspect them and oil them before refitting. I don't think they're listed separately from the oil lines so, if they do looked damaged, you'd have to get suitable generic replacements of the correct size and oil proof (of course!).

As for oil, I've always used Motul 7100 10W40.

By the way, don't forget that the drain plug torque is only 20Nm, not the 42Nm shown in the workshop manual.

Thanks guys. I’ll get them ordered tomorrow, hopefully Ducati glasgow can post them out.

Yeah i looked at the o-rings and they do look tricky to get off…and they look in good condition so I’ll leave them in-place.

It’s a used oil cooler, been tested for leaks apparently and can be sent back if it’s faulty. Looks really clean though so hoping it’ll be fine.

Any thoughts on this other sump plug I took out accidentally? (Hungover yesterday when i done it) it’s a 6mm hex instead of a 5mm and it sits close to the oil filter.

Although they're not listed separately in the Evo parts manual, they do appear in earlier Monster parts lists with the number 88650151A. I imagine they haven't changed for the Evo but they're described as 8 X 1mm so it should be an easy matter to check if you do need any (they're only about 35p).
