Question Rust in tank which treatment?

Hi Guys

Have any of you had to treat your tank due to rust. I have had to leave bike standing for a while, pulled it in to get it ready for use to find the seal on the filler cap had gone hard, and the drain from around the filler neck was blocked! I have had a look in the tank with an endoscope and it is not too bad. Have cleared the drain, so need to clean the tank out, it is just surface rust, not flaking, so I do not think I need to use a sealer.

Any advice would be great.

Cheers

Steve

I've used this process once before, really impressed by the results.
It was on my '73 dt125 which had been stood for donkey's years and was pretty furred up inside - cleared all of it away, no damage to paint if you don't let it overflow. Mine took about 2 days.
Only thing to watch is that when you give it the final clean there will be a very fine layer of rust develop before your eyes, so you have to be quick and get some thin oil (gt85) or petrol in there. As my dt runs on pre-mix 2 stroke oil it's pretty well protected.

I'd steer well clear from any sealers if it's not leaking due to ethanol problems and gumming up the carbs.

You'll laugh at this, but it works! Fill it up to the brim with Coke, cheap supermarket stuff works. It will clean it out like you won't believe. Now think what it does to your stomach!

It does yes or pop to Aldi or Lidl and buy malt vinegar bottles for pennies and fill it up. and swill around. We are talking bad tanks here but it works but you have to leave some days.

Hi Guys thanks for the info, I think I will give the coke a try first, as the tank is not too bad. I will report back the results.

The active chemical in coke that cleans your tank,is phosphoric acid,it's added to give the "sharp" taste,it's usually supplied with tank lining kits, but is freely available to purchase, kettle descaler, is another common use

Yes, coke is a good cleaner as stated its the phosphoric acid. The highway police in the US usually have a few bottles in the car as its good for cleaning up blood off the road apparently!

Mine was way beyond repair, so I replaced it with a brand-new one as I couldn't find a good secondhand one, Riders of Bridgewater helped me get all the correct parts, and the delivery from Italy was really fast, but the cost, man that hurt....

Yea, I think I read somewhere that they are £800 new and thats just for a standard tank not the fancy Monster Art/DP ones! Ouch indeed.
