S4R spins but won't fire (fixed)

Hi guys, here's a heads up about an issue with getting my S4R to start this year, it would turn over on the button but was very reluctant to start, this got progressively worse until it refused to fire at all, I spoke to Neil at Cornerspeed & he suggested the ignition relay might be faulty so I replaced it (£7 nice cheap fix) and bingo starts like a guddun now, when Neil saw the original relay (mounted on the side of the battery box) he said the early relays were notorious for failure due to not being sealed properly at the bottom.

The exact same thing happened to my S2R 1000 back in 2010. Since that happened, I've always carried this little link wire under the saddle, so any duff relay can be removed and bridged as a get you home measure.

I can't remember which terminals go where, but the internal wiring of the relay is usually printed on the relay housing itself, so you can work it out from there.

To be honest, it'd be no use on my Evo as you can't easily get to the relays like you can on the old hinged tank models.

If you swap the two relays on the side of the battery box over (*ie & S*R models) and the ignition relay's faulty, you should find the bike completely dead, since the other (identical) item is the main relay.
I keep a couple spare in my toolbox now, as Mark says, they're a pretty cheap part.

Good call with the bridge Luddiite, however for the sake of £7 I will be carrying a spare ignition relay in my toolkit from now on.

I've just moved from a carb bike to efi so am going to grab one of these.

Do you have a part number or good source?

should be £6.something, eBay is full of second hand ones for double that and new at four times the dealer price. There’s probably a generic car part that’s only about £4 but I’m afraid I don’t know what it might be
