I have received gazzas Kit also ...Thanks ,, just deciding what will be best black weather proof paint ?????? maybe crinkle black or gloss ????

Funny you should mention that. I had thought they might look quite good with Black crinkle.

Stop worrying about a weatherproof finish, you could use it bare if you wanted.

Whichever paint that doesn't allow flies to stick, or at least allows you to clean the dead buggers off easily!

I find my single screw rim fastener to be very positive and easy to use. The old Lucas ones could tend to be a bit vague, as the u-shaped clasp could rotate and appear to screw up tight, whilst only really be gripping itself.
My Monster one clicks in sweetly every time and draws the rim up nicely.

A note on design... The original Monster light has a very neat O-ring inserted all the way round, to seal against the rim, making the headlamp weather proof.
This is a feature which I would like to incorporate into future adapters, but would need a very specific - If not custom made - cutter, and a supply of O-ring rubber in a suitable gauge.
In the mean time I suggest that once you have decided on a light unit that you think may be permanent, to run a bead of silicone round the lamp and the adapter (both rebates) to keep the rain out of the shell.... Any damp in there could cause the terminals to corrode.

I still have a couple of kits available if anyone else wishes to start experimenting with better lights.... Just drop me a PM.

anyone know where i can get spare Bosch rim U clasp as metal fatigue has done for mine, i see Lucas ones online but not bosch

80s BMWs used the same size Bosch headlamp as our Monsters. R80, R90 and R100 ect.

So possibly they employed the same clip too?

At last a dry mild night.
I've just managed a couple of short test rides.
The first was with the "xenon" bulb that was supplied with the Defender upgrade kit.
Initial impression was that the light was whiter than before and Dip beam was illuminating a good length of the nearside, even though the light seemed to fall into "patches", presumably created by the crystal facets?
Main beam was also a bit patchy (less so), probably about the same as the standard reflector, or marginally better... A disappointing lack of penetration.

Main is good enough to see where I'm going and there is a big confidence gain when meeting cars coming the other way, as I can see the nearside.
Main also has a pale patch on the right hand side close to the bike which makes right hand corners a bit of a grope.

I then had a look at removing the internal reflector or bulb shield as Jeff and I had discussed, but failed to see how it would come out of the bulb hole without folding it up.
So I just swapped to Osram Nightbreaker plus or whatever they call them now.

The difference is immediately noticeable when flicking up to main just yards out of my drive... lovely penetration and spread..
The colour is not quite so white as the xenon, but there is no patchiness to the pattern.. A lovely full even spread ahead.
Dip beam is also much improved with a denser spread close in front of the bike, filling in the gap with light, between me and the car that I followed for a little while.
Meeting cars is no longer a heart in the mouth experience, with full nearside illumination reaching past the oncoming vehicles.
The pale patch that I mentioned above is still there on main for the right handers,. However a quick flick to dip fills the road and restores confidence... Not exactly what I want, but this is a small area to improve.

Yeah.... Pretty pleased with myself.
Next move is probably to fit a relay to get more power to the bulb and then probably have a play with other bulbs.

Great to get back in the saddle again for a little blast.. Good bikes M900s aint they...

No not the standard unit.
As Darren pointed out, it's a cheap Land Rover/Defender upgrade kit as pictured in this thread, fitted to my bike with an adapter.
