Clutch refit problem.
Hi guys, I've followed the good old Haynes manual for a clutch refit. I've got to the point where I've done the six spring loaded bolts up and I can see that the last friction plate has enough space to move out of the basket and spin... I'm guessing that's bad...
All plates are in as per the manual ( 2x steel, 1x friction, 1x dished with dot on outside, alternating friction/steel, last plate being steel). 7 came out, 7 new ones went back in. When I put the push rod in it didn't locate to the back easily and needed a bit of a tap to move all the way and the rod does activate with the clutch lever. The pressure plate is located with the marks in place and all screws done up. I've removed the basket and replace the seal behind it today and then built everything back up. Has anyone else had this before as I'm not sure what would hold it further out? Thanks, Stu. |

Took the rod back out as that was fouling the pressure plate and it has dragged out a small spacer/seal from the slave side somewhere. I'll try and ID it on the Ducati parts pages and hope it can be refit easily...

Here’s the part it dragged out. When it came out it was between the two o-rings and you can just make out where it has carved a groove in the one on the right and that’s just from fitting it as these were new.

I thought it may be the part of the oil seal on the slave cylinder end but when it’s next to my spare seal they look different

Look at the parts diagram for the gearbox, there’s a small bearing and oil seal in the end of the shaft.
Seal is cheap and easy fix, bearing is cheap but can be a pig to remove.

If it is the seal, make sure you fit it the right way round (lip facing outwards) otherwise it will leak oil into your clutch.
Don’t ask how I know...

When you get it all back together again if you have not changed the plates on a dry clutch before you may find you don’t get neutral easily stick with it once they bed in after a few miles they are fine.
This is what I experienced with mine I used Newfren plates from the guy who is in Lincoln on eBay. |

Renew the seal, it goes in the of the shaft clutch end, they're about £1.76 or so.
Then check your clutch stack height, that's all the plates together. Having put in new platesyou may be oversize, hence the plate falling out of the basket. Aim for 38/38.5mm IIRC, to achieve this you may have to swap 1.5mm steels for 1mm steels.
