Seat
Hi
Are early monster seats pretty generic? For example will an M600/760/900 fit an 05 S4R? The locking mechanism is not relevant as it’s going to get shortened anyway, just needs to fit around tank and the rear frame. |

Pleasantly surprised!

I'm fairly sure the fitting to the tank is marginally different between the early models and the later ones, as well as the locking mechanism. That said, I have an early version which fits on my bike acceptably and no one ever notices (or are too polite to say anything LOL)
Slob, Pedro, Albie or Mr Gazza amongst others will be along to give you precise information. Are we going to get a pic of your bike soon? You've been fettling it for a while now...

Yup, the shape of the seat front/tank cutouts changed in around '98 to a less angular shape. To be safe *ie or S* models will fit, late '98-'99 is a bit of a gamble without seeing decent photos first.

As you're only concerned with the fit to the tank it simplifies things a bit, as we can disregard the catch.
Essentially the radius of the very forwardmost point of the seat and the corresponding radius in the tank, is the issue. Up to 1999 a small radius was employed, Those ones won't fit your '05. In 2000 the radius was increased. (and catch changed) 2000 to 2002 might well fit, but there is a bit of variation that doesn't seem to fit a pattern. '02 onwards you are in luck, as they rationalised the seats and one size fits all. There are two heights of foam to chose from. 620ie for example has a low cut and S4 is higher, both will fit the tank the same.

Don’t try to identify what a seat is from the part number.
The plastic seat base (And it’s moulded in number) didn’t change when they changed the radius at the front: they just trimmed them differently.

Ha ha picture of the bike - when I’m done which is proving to be a challenge as we’ve just had a baby so progress is slow.
I don’t want to put a pick up until I’m happy with the end result. |
