Its worth saying that the swatch in my post above (DUC 03683) is just dusty, what you see isnt flake. As far as will show up in a photo its Plain Black.

Some metallics are decidedly not very metallic. my Wife's car is described as 'metallic' black but I can't see any flake in it, guessing the old Monster black is something similar.

And here is where the confuision arises......to you or I, its a plain Black but it is in fact a metallic, which I could only see when he shone his very powerful test light on it and even then its difficult to see., and I could see the same very very subtle flake in my sample from the mudguard.
I definitely wouldnt have seen it if he hadnt pointed it out. Interestingly even the DUC9 OPACO is a Metallic paint, but you wouldnt know it for looking.
I would be interested to hear from Davy, I think if he shines a very powerful light at the right angle he should also just be able to see that it does have a very fine flake in it. You wont see it in any photo, I dont think.

I have just had her out in the bright sunshine and taken a couple of pics using an iPad Pro and it has indeed picked up the very very fine flakes. But it doesn’t appear to have the same paint on the underside it looks like it’s just plain black under there. Now it’s still original you can see the painters date code. If some one would pm me their email I’ll send the pics so you can clearly see for yourselfs.

So.just looking at the pics again I’m thinking the underside is indeed the same it’s just not been lacquered so is quite flat looking. Anyway I’ve just emailed the pics to darkness so I’m sure he will post them soon.

Having got to page 3 of a debate on ‘What colour black?’, may I please make the observation that there is only one colour of black.

It’s really difficult to make as a paint though as any reflections give a truly black object apparent non-black colours, not to mention the inclusion of non-black pigments in nearly all paints and dyes.

Most “Black” garments or paints are very, very dark shades of blue, red or green. Ie: not “Black” really!

What are you trying to say, Darkness? My paint guy dropped by this evening (he lives just up the road) to pick up the sample I sprayed this afternoon . As he left he said with a heavy dose of irony...." Good job you're not too anal , Patrick "

Is there such a thing regarding Monsters (Or old Land Rovers for that matter)? A restoration is ‘Right’ or else it isn’t.

There are some wonderful customisations out there though and some argue that that was always Ducat’s intention, so that “Bog Standard” is the aberration!

Youre right, I dont know why the Black matters so much when the cases are going to be non standard. Vapour blasted main cases and Xylan on the casing covers.

Sticking with the thread theme, heres another " What colour Black?" Question.
Davy are your barrels original paint? I dont want to get as pedantic about colour on these, but more, what was the level of sheen meant to be .....Matt or Satin?

For what it's worth, RS Paints list a black specifically for the Monster cylinders.

Whether it's just a generic VHT black or a faithful match to the original, I couldn't say.

Thanks. Will take a look. Do you know whether the original was matt, satin of gloss on the barrels?

There's a NOS barrel on eBay at the moment with some nice clear pictures and it looks like a semi-gloss/satin finish.
