The swinging arm spindle runs in needle rollers so the material chosen needs to be hard enough to withstand the rollers running on the shaft. The original shafts were hardened and ground (probably made from 52100) steel which has a Rockwell hardness of 62 - 66 HRC.
Stainless steel typically has a hardness range between 20 and 60 on the Rockwell scales. The specific hardness will depend on factors such as the alloying elements present, heat treatment, and the desired balance of properties for the intended application.
Even the better titanium alloys, the highest strength ones, will only get to mid 40's on the Rockwell C hardness scale.

Red Fox is looking for one for me at mo - I measured 265mm and they have NOS at 263mm so assume it may be the right one.

I'm going to be opening my own collection of swingarm axles at this rate!

If 263mm is long enough then I've got this going spare if you're interested;



As near as I can see, around 263/264mm. The clip grooves are 3mm in from the ends, it fits perfectly on an M900 swingarm but although long enough to fit flush with my old 851/888 arm, it was too short to fit the clips.

I measured mine with a piece of 12mm tubing slid inside and went from the extreme end of the round part of the clamp to the same on the other end so mine may have been slightly incorrect but I can see to fit the clips it needs to say 264 just to the clip groove to use them.

From their website I think the one Red Fox has may be the same as yours DD but they list if for a 750 or 900ss.

Are you around tomorrow evening at all? I'm off to Wales Saturday for a week otherwise

Mine is 264 end to end so the clips wouldn't fit, as per my old swingarm I suppose?

Looks like there may not be a longer version?

I shall be out tomorrow afternoon, not sure when I'll be back but should be back for early evening, I'm here all day battling with the Land Rover today if you're around.

Sorry no pics at mo, but axle from Tim was finally wide enough and safely bolts in full width.

Now have brand new NOS 900 and 600 axles to sell when project completed
