Thats what a whole bikes worth of fixings looks like for an M900!
I would say thats 90 or 95% of every bit of zinc plating on the bike. Cleaning work done and ready to go to Mercury Plating. It gives me sleepless nights thinking about a call that says " I'm sorry we've lost your plating"

Work stopped play some what today!
The XC60 went in for a service at the main dealer to get the stamp, but I declined the £500 extra to change the pads- just the pads not the discs aswell!!! So that needed doing, then went to do some blasting and my mates compressor was playing up- turns out it goes better with oil in it....Oooops., so that needed an oil change. Still managed to drop the Plating off at Mercury where it will take a week and cost £65, which I think is amazing value, you really do yourself a favour with them to present the stuff clean, just gets you off on the right foot. The Gateros plating kit has its place but it would take weeks if not months to do it all yourself. Where it comes into its own is picking up the stuff that inevitably missed the main load. Finally got the small covers blasted ready for Xylan coating by Sandwell. They will insist on reblasting them to ensure absolute cleanliness, but again you help yoursef by presenting the stuff to the highest standard. Thought Id improve on the Factory finish and dressed out the casting defects before a final blast to make them uniform.

Wowser,£500 for pads, similar price for my Mercedes GLE350 at a main dealer!!
Anyways, back on topic,£65 for plating all that lot sounds like a bargain but saying that I do realise all the prep work you put into it. Great thread this, love it,and amazing attention to detail, for sure it will be a credit to you when it's all done. Thanks for taking the time to put up all the pictures and updates. Kimbo |

Anyway back to the fun stuff. Today was another day up at Riviera Autobody prepping the main paintwork, in particular the tank and removing the dent with their natty spot weld dent puller. Ty was on the intelligent end while I held onto the tank. It was surprisingly hard to pull, which I suppose bodes well for the general state of the tank-not rusted out. A couple of pin holes where the spot weld had pulled through required MIG spot fill, then a light belt sand followed by a fibre reinforced bonding filler. After that it was flatted off with a 180 grit orbital sander. A final filler layer was applied and sanded back with a 180 pad sander by hand.( forgot to photograph the final sand back) . Ready for filler primer now. Also brought the wheels home today.

Just received photos from the paint shop where they pressed on after I left....( read:- got out of their hair and stopped getting in the way!!)
Satin black barrels and starter body are done and the primer filler coat for main paintwork which I will then rub back for the black metallic.

Quiet day to day , just the re-assembly of the rear wheel and calipers completed
Not spectacular in itself, but significant in that it marks the very first re-assembly of parts on the rebuild. Probably not much more building can take place till the plating is back in a couple of weeks, but may be able to progress the painting a bit.

Whats this black part under the seat catch mechanism?
It came off the bike in this position, but when I went to remind myself of how it went back on, by looking at the SD micro fiche, I couldnt see it there. So I guess its not required? Although without it the seat catch mech. will be about 3mm lower...problem?

Have the bent down bits got holes in them?
If so I'd imagine it's for some aftermarket indicators that have been fitted at some point. Nasher.

Yep, could be. Theyre pretty beefy though, more likely some sort of pannier?

Even less today. Clearing and oiling the threads following spraying of the frame.
And re-assembling the seat lock. Dont want to put too much weight on the frame before its offered over the rebuilt motor, later.

Could be for the pannier set that was offered for a while - "think" it used the same panniers as the early ST's but I could be wrong
I've got a NOS Givi rack kit for my 900 and that does not fit like that bracket, instead it clamps around the frame tube and onto the flat part of the tea tray so I dont think its for a rack. |
