Will it work?
Not sure, but I'll put my 2 cents (Pence?) worth in anyway...
Depends on the Tacho... If it's mechanical, then I doubt it will work, because (as far as I'm aware) there's no drive mechanism on the engine for a Tacho. Many older bikes run the tacho drive from the camshaft and would require the correct ratio as you mentioned above. If it's electronic, then it may work, but I've no idea what ratio it would need to be. Welcome to the world of modifying bikes! Many aftermarket Tachos run a sensor wire from the coil so they pick up a signal everytime a spark "happens" and convert it to a reading on the tacho. Not sure if there's any ratio required with them. First step is to find out from the supplier if it's mechanical or electronic... |

I fitted the revlight to my 900 monster, it wasn't too much of a problem. The sensor wire picks up off one of the CDI inputs.
The main problem I had was in programming the bugger, as part of the sequence it asks you to run the bike at 4000 rpm so it can work out the pulses / rev, and without a tacho you have to guess it. After a couple of goes though I got it somewhere near right. Worked a treat after that. It has developed a problem recently though, at high rpm it gets confused and goes a bit mad. It worked fine at first, so I assume I've managed to break it somehow. |

The carbon surround and tacho came as one item, if i remember right the old surround comes off and the existing speedo and light cluster fit straight in the new surround. As its got the plug and play connections you only need a few cable ties to tidy things up and the jobs done, nice and easy just how i like things.
It was definatly a Ducati item and i think i got it off e-bay about 18 months ago, can't remember how much i payed for it though. If your interested i bet Stu at Spareshack can tell you what it is, if you can still get them and how much they sell for. Good luck with the search, Cheers, Shandy |

Heres another option. Its a Rizoma surround unit with electronic tacho to match your speedo and uses the standard speedo, light housings etc but in a different fascia.
Its been on 3 yeaars with no problems. But it aint cheap. Theres more expensive ones too with a oil pressure gauge and clock and even a voltmeter available. |

The mini tacho on the first link is non starter. It offers a choice of ratio which suggests it is mechanical, and the monsters tacho is electronic. Also I know guys that have tried these on streetfighters or chops, and think they are pretty crap TBH. They aren't very accurate and the needle tends to wobble all over the place - the mini speedos are just as bad BTW. The second one looks a better bit of kit, and it is electonic - but it reads up to 16,000 rpm!  The monster redlines at just 9000rpm so you would only be using half the clocks range. This also hints that it could be designed for multi cylinder engines, and not calibrated for a twin. I had one of the DP LED tachos on my 600, and paid over £200 for it from CCM. It developed a fault in less than 3 months, and I then waited 6 months for a replacement to be sent from italy, only to have that one go belly up as well - not impressed  It was also way too bright at night (very distracting with rain on your visor) and had had no dimming facility.Should I need a tacho again I'd either go for a LED Revlight, or one of the integrated units like Duncans photo - Road Racing, or carbon fiber DP clock housing which come supplied with an analogue tacho. Had a picture of the DP one somewhere I'll see if I can track it down and post it up later. Heres another photo of the Road Racing dash, and one of my LED tacho lit up... when it still worked that is

Ahh - found the bugger!
German seller on ebay has both the complete units and tacho/housing individually for sale. Also NattyBoy and Stuart at spareshack both had some of these for grabs - may be worth a PM? Lee also sells these units I got mine from him (Superlight 3) not the cheapest opption but it looks better IMO two clocks side by side, Gary I think you can still get the white faced clocks just a different part number isn't it.
