Did my 1998 M600 belts yesterday using the allen key method. Ended up setting them much slacker than last time when I used the twisting 45 degrees method! After 3 years the Exact belts that came off still looked basically mint, maybe a bit hardened.
I did manage to crack the "Horizontal rubber cap" a bit where the bolts go in. See pic below. Do I need to remove the cam gear to change this? |

Well done for doing the belts, but it's a shame about the cracked rear cover.
Unfortunately you'll need to strip the belt, pulley, etc to replace it, and you'll need the special tool to undo and tighten the nut. I believe the nut is a replace each time part as well. Dare I suggest it's best left until 2yrs time when you do the belts again!! I'm curious how you managed to crack the rear cover changing the belts though?

Cheers Nasher!
Both the bolts were a little corroded in place. When I loosened them the threaded inserts moved and the cover cracked at the corner. Both top bolts did the same. It's really brittle. The vertical is still nice and supple so maybe it is due to all the road grime? I am defo taking your advice! But waiting 3 years as I have shiney new Exact belts. |

Cheers Nasher! The worst thing was the first one went crack...and then I obviously went straight onto the second without considering it might have had an almost identically hard life What a numpty!
