M600 rear wheel bearings.

Just been chatting to a mate of mine who's wife rides a lovely Yellow M600 1967.

He's had a look at the rear wheel bearings and discovered that there are two each side.

I had to admit that I thought there was only supposed to be one each side, but I've never had to do anything to mine so assumed they would be one a side like the front.

I found an exploded view of a 600 dark which shows one a side, but bearings for later bikes appear to be sold in sets of four for the rear wheel, 620ie ect.

Could anyone throw any light on this please?

It looks to me like he might have a later rear wheel perhaps?

Surely there’s one each side in the wheel and two in the cush drive?

Stop calling me surely! No he's got two bearings each side of the wheel, not in the cush drive. He does know what he's talking about as an engineer and motorcycle mechanic, hence his surprise at finding two.

Also surprised no-one noticed my typo.. The bike is 1997..

Changet front and rear wheel bearings on 'Norah' (M900ie) earlier this year.
One bearing each side front and rear.

Can't remember where I bought them !!!

Same on a 600ss from a few, well many years ago. Same single set per side on all of the 750's I've had, carb and IE's.
Not sure why you'd want two sets, not like it's a massive load bearing area.

Any witness marks on the ends of the central spacer to suggest it's been cut down?

unfortunately no standard parts on hand to compare, but it's beginning to sound like someone has had a little fiddle at some point!
He's put the same type bearings back, as it clearly works like that, but puzzling non the less.

I wonder if any Aprilia or Cagiva model used the same Brembo wheel?

Even so it would be strange to double up on the bearings.

Something doesn’t sound right there- all the wheels I’ve fitted bearings into have had a shoulder to tap them up against.

Is that not the case with Brembo wheels?

If it is then surely the recess isn’t deep enough to get two sets of bearings in?

As for the later models’ rear wheel bearings being sold in sets of four, I suspect that is to encompass the Cush Drive assembly as well.

As Slob said, two bearings for the wheel and another two for the Cush Drive.

My guess would be that they didn't have the right size bearings and fitted the smaller ones. I had 2 Cagiva era bikes and they both had Brembo wheels. Not sure how Aprilia fit into the equation though as Ithought they were nothing to do with Ducat, as they are owned by Peugeot IIRC

AH HA!!
The wheel itself has a single bearing each side (sealed 6005's, still got some somewhere) then there is a spindle that is a part of the sprocket carrier that does use a pair of bearings (6005's again).
I remembered that but we are talking wheel not carrier ... or are we??

Thanks to everyone for confirming what I thought.
His rear wheel has obviously been modded at some point.
He is going to strip it again at some point and then we'll have a better idea of what's been done, as to why, I think that is likely to remain a mystery.
