Fuel Pump Failure
Hi Folks, would really appreciate some advice please. The fuel pump on my 03 1000Sie is not priming when I turn on the ignition. I've drained most of the fuel out of the tank, removed the cap head and grub screws from the tank ring but it will not budge. Is it just a very tight fit into the tank, or am I missing something somewhere ?
I'm guessing it will be a wiring failure in the tank based on what I've read on here, but I'll know better when I can see the pump and it's associated gubbins. |

If it's like the 900s, it takes a good thump to seat it again. Make sure you've got all the grub screws loosened enough (take 'em out entirely if not sure - but don't drop any in the tank).
I think I worked a wooden hammer shaft around the edge of the tank ring to get it started the first time I disturbed it. Didn't take a lot. |

Ta for the advice, I think by the sound of it some controlled brute force is needed. I've made sure all the cap head screws and grub screws are out and it's still stuck fast not wanting to budge, so some persuasion is obviously needed !

I guess it’s a steel tank let me know if it’s the pump I’ve got a couple spare if you need one for free.

I had the same issue when dismantling the tank on my 620. So I made this out of a piece of MDF. I used the fuel cap as a template to drill the holes, then just screwed in the long bolts. it gave plenty of leverage with a hand hold on each side to 'wiggle'. It came off quite easily. I used the same method to reposition it. Don't forget the red rubber grease. Having this made it easier to perfectly position it parallel, couldn't stand to look down and see it slightly wonky. Hope this helps if you've not got it off already?

Check the relay first, before you do anything drastic.
It’s a £13 part and they fail. I know, I even carry a spare under the seat. Mark the relays so you know which one went where, then swap them around to see if the pump kicks back in when you turn the ignition on. |
