Another Ducati newbie

Hi everyone,

I bought my bike a week or so ago, and am frantically cleaning it, and prodding it, staring at it as you do when you've just bought a new bike. Since its here in my lounge (no shed or garage) its easy to do the above in warmth and comfort!

The bike has a few mods from the previous owner:

• Engine: Hi-comp JE pistons (11.1),
• Ported heads (stock valves),
• VeeTwo cams,
• MPB collets,
• Kämna Alu flywheel,
• Stock W-M 5.9 ECU with adapted map,
• Wide-ratio gearbox from ST2 (supposedly better for road use though I wouldn't know LOL),
• All ball and roller bearings new.
• Dyno print out shows just under 90BHP.
Feedback from previous owner is that the engine tuning work was done at about 20k miles.
All the rolling bearings (crank and g/box shafts) also replaced at 30k mile as a precaution.

Bike: standard suspension apart from linear 8.2N/mm fork springs and newly serviced fork (seals, oil),
Custom CNC billet 7075 triple clamps,
Apex adjustable clip-ons,
Custom 2-1 exhaust with Silmotor slip-on,
Custom rear-sets, opened-up airbox lid with washable filter,

Speedo is in KPH so has the dreaded mph sticker, anyone have an address of where to get a speedo face cards in mph?

The gear lever is currently reverse selection (down for up; up for down) as this is an elegant solution to work with the rearsets.

I plan to put it on the road in spring, so I hope to meet up with some of you for some ride out events and social gatherings.

One other question - given the typical UK weather- is using an open clutch cover advisable, and anyone with personal experience?

Hi and welcome along to the wonderful world of Monsters and your bike sounds great but as everyone here knows- without photos it just doesn't exist!!
(You'll have to use something Photobucket to post them here though).

As for open clutch covers- I've ran my '97 900 with one in all weathers for almost all of the seventeen years I've owned it without any issues other than it's a tad more noisy as it wears.

Thanks for the info on the clutch cover Flip, its good to know that changing the cover won't lead to expensive clutch repairs!

Nottsbiker (& Dirty), yes this is the bike that was on ebay and came from Sweden. The first owner - who did all the mods - sold it to his mate in the UK who rode it under 50miles... I'm glad I bought it before you broke it. Its a little tatty here and there and needs a good clean but I'm getting there. It should be looking good by March. LOL.

Now these high comp pistons are there apparently, but I hope I won't be seeing them anytime soon and ideally never!

I will look into the photobucket hosting so I can post a few pics.

What rear sets do you have as there are copies of the original DP ones (like mine) that can be had for reasonable money which allow a linkage.

Not that I'm adverse to a reverse shift pattern you understand

I have no idea of the brand/ manufacturer of the rearsets. I will post a pic at some point soon, but right now my new photobucket account isn't playing ball.

Your bike looks very well looked after and I like the gold allen bolts/ carbon F. Mine has some carbon but its dull. I'm having it lacquered this week along with the side panels

Do you have a steering damper on your bike? Something that you would recommend adding??

Yes it is looked after but not overly molliecoddled- I mean you can't ride for thirty odd years (seventeen on the Monster) in the UK without getting caught in a shower or two.

I've never felt the need for a steering damper to be honest and I'm not a great fan of the way they tend to make low speed riding feel all heavy and vague at the same time but I know they have their fans so I guess it is a personal thing.

I have my forks pulled through the yokes and the rear of the bikes raised up so it does get a little lively on some less well surfaced roads (almost all of my favourite country ones then) when pushing on a bit but Maxton internals in the forks and a Nitron rear shock have been a revelation in then handling.

Having the suspension upgraded and suited to your weight and riding style/purpose is easily the best modification you could make in my opinion- not just for going quickly but for the overall enjoyment of riding the bike.

Photobucket actually worked. I suspect it always did and that my previous problems were down to rider error! Anyhow previously mentioned bike, in previously mentioned lounge so its definitely true LOL.

Dropped off at a mates shop my cam covers, clutch cover, front sprocket cover, side panels for paint and /or clear VHT to spruce them up a bit. Should get them back in a week so expect another pic -if my tech ability is still working!
