I'm in the same position with my Monster, saves £3 on insurance but costs £15 to change. I'm not sure it would be a deterrent at all, it's not as if you'd see it unless you were looking.

The illusion that it will be difficult to move only helps with the casual not pro's. Add some road grime and 'patina', look less desirable... LOL Hard with a monster that

I wouldn't bother personally. My 916 was datatagged from new but many of the tagged panels have been changed now so not much left to track now.
My insurance company sent me some DNA+ security marking kits FOC but they don't offer any discount for using them, they're still in the packets. I can't see it preventing a theft, if a serious crim wants your bike they won't be stopped by a few markings. I consider it like putting a lock code in your phone - it won't stop anyone stealing it and you won't get it back even if they can't circumvent it, so why bother? That said I don't leave my bikes in vulnerable locations, they are stored securely and insured on an agreed value policy, meaning I'd get a decent payout if the worse happened...

My bike was Datatagged by the first owner too.
They didn't fit the warning sticker though so, unless the thieves are very observant, they won't know and they won't be deterred. I've also changed many of the tagged parts anyway. And I never bothered re-registering my details with Datatag when I bought it in the first place. As you can see, I don't rate the system very highly. |

I was told at a show by one of the Met police bike theft specialists that the handlers that pay the thieves are reluctant to take marked bikes and those that will take them only give a few tens of pounds for them.
They suggested that making the fact the bike is marked obvious to a potential thief is a good deterrent to theft. Andy

It's ironic but the only bike I had stolen and didn't get back was the one that had been Datatagged by the previous owner.

Xena alarmed disc locks are a decent addition to your security, I reckon.
Adds an alarm with no wiring issues or battery flattening, as well as the disc lock itself. Difficult to forget and ride off too. And, with the alarm, its less likely that someone will try to move your bike for parking reasons or somesuch, while a plain disc lock might cause damage in such circumstances. |
