Hello and help please!

Hi all picked up my new ( to me) M750 1998 only 5k mileage and in, as you would hope great condition, rode it 150 miles home a week ago and was enjoying it thoroughly when suddenly the engine note changed almost as if it started firing on only one, but obviously not that bad as it kept going still starts really well (seems to only half turn and then it's running) but it seems a bit gutless and rough running, I have no other experience of v-twins and my other bike is a 900 Hornet, am pretty sure something is up but not sure where to start, bike has been laid up for at least 6 months and am wondering whether possibly the fuel has gone gungy or something, as I only rode it for about 5 miles before getting on the motorway to come home am not 100% sure of anything, any help would be greatly appreciated

Pull off each plug cap one at a time whilst its running and see what happens. If its missing on one, one will stall it and the other will make no difference.
Also check the fuel pipe is not kinked under the tank where someone has lifted it to charge the battery maybe, and then lowered it and trapped it. It's easy done and starves it of fuel.

If you've done 150 miles on it, then I'm assuming you'll have put new petrol in.
Depending on how the bike's been stored, there could possibly be water in the tank though.
Try draining the float bowls, collecting what comes out and seeing if there's any trace of water.
If the tank's not got a lot of fuel in it, it might be worth siphoning it out and checking for water there too.

If its starting as well as you say, its tempting to assume that the electrics are basically ok.

Does the fuel filter look dark, ie dirty ?

Remember the 750 only turns out a low 60's bhp, your Hornet generates a lot more than that!! You might feel the Monster is a bit low on power to start with. Still you can use it all and the chassis handles very well.

I'd go for a general spruce up. new plugs, clean air filter and fuel.
A good idea would be to add a good gloop of ProFST which will help clean out the carbs which could have some 'varnish' in them.
As the odds are that this is something pretty simple so start with simple sensible stuff.

It'll be worth checking that the overflow drain is clear, it also lets some air into the tank. A partial vacuum can upset the fuel flows

Enjoy the 750, you'll grow into it riding wise and find like most monsters it might not be fast but it's quick

Thanks for all your helpful comments guys, absolutely love the bike and am sure what ails it is only minor and will let you know when I find out. The bike has also introduced me to the joys of ear plugs, previously having only ridden fours from Mr Honda wondered what all the mags were talking about when they said ear protection was required, but after 150 miles of aftermarket pipes on a twin (lovely noise though it is) my ears were ringing!

Hello and Welcome

just to say had a friend ride the bike who races an Aprilia RSV and he pronounced the bike fit and well having "pinned" it around the lanes hereabouts, he thinks it was me just riding it like my hornet/ like a baby' which evidently it isnt, he gave me a few tips and indeed it makes sense so am pleased to say now i'm getting used to it am really enjoying it immensely.

I came from IL4's to a M600 and I though the bottom end was broken for 2 weeks. Turned out I was just not riding it properly.

I'm just getting to grips with my 4 week old to me 620ie, some days I ride like a twonk and think its slow, other days I start to be at one with the little yellow pocket rocket and realise its actually quite quick!
