I bet someone (Ian Highlander?) could write a script that looked for certain criteria and purged bogus members automatically every hour, at the risk of upsetting Mr T.Test of Wimbledon, who really does ride an imported M400.
I get the feeling all these 'Test' users are signed up by a script exploiting an obvious vBulletin flaw, perhaps one of those 'type the numbers/letters you see' could be added to stop the buggers.

These scripts are usually set to pick the first item in a list and add test to any blank boxes that need manual input. As has been said, one of those boxes where you have to type the letters in would stop most , if not all of those, spam attacks.

Where I've set up cms and lms systems I just don't allow the page sign up page to feature in the site map and exclude it in the htaccess directives. Not had to use anything else like captchas, the scripts aren't at all smart yet. Captchas can be machine read just not 100% reliably, you just have to apply some sophisticated segmentation to read the stuff.
