Blown rectifier
Hi to the electrics gods out there
My rectifer recently died but not before cooking my battery, but strangely not blowing any bulbs. I ran a multimeter over the system and output from the alternator was not reaching the battery. Seemed to point to the rectifer so i have replaced it, On replacing the old rectifier I noticed that the cables from the alternator had got hot enought to melt the connectors together. I managed to seperate them and fit the new unit. Battery is now charging as it should and resistance across the alternator is within tolerances, my issue is this. The cables from the alternator are still getting hot, probably not hot enough to melt the cables, but enought to concern me on a long journey they might. Is this normal ? Bike is a 10 year old M900 ( that has only done 4K) Thanks in anticipation Clive |

spot on thanks, what worries me is the old rectifier may not have been blown (bollox).

dont know whether it is good or not, but they can have it for free, the pins are sheared where they plugin to the alternator cables (possible why it was not working) it is an orriginal from a 95 M900. Send me a personal email if they want it.
I chucked it into the bin but it should still be there |

I got a new uprated reggie from http://www.electrexworld.co.uk/ for about £60 as my battery was not getting a charge. I thought bugger this as the standard battery is poo anyway, and splashed out on a decent battery for £90 from http://www.knightbatteries.com/popup...1471&p_i=91471 and the reggie just to make sure. My wire connectors were melted too like yours, so I rewired the whole lot to make sure. Everything is hunky dory and the battery is vastly superior. I know now that it will turn over and start every time without fail. The battery will keep a full charge on the shelf for 2 years or more, and can be flattened (deep discharged) without knackering it. And it has more grunt to it. Result.
