always wanted a Monster, never quite got one, but...

For years I always fancied a 900 Monster... I did dabble with a 600 for a while, but its always been my ambition to own an early carb 900... Early 2019 I looked around for one, even put an advert on this forum, but nothing came up that was suitable, I wanted one I could rebuild as a winter project... Then I got sidetracked when a tatty ST4s came up cheap.

Next winter's project is definitely going to be a restoration of an early Monster, just need to find the right bike, but time is on my side...

below is the story in pictures of the ST4s winter build... a bit to go yet...here's what I started with. it looks far better in the pictures than it was... it was actually really tatty...

thanks! I have done this sort of thing as a hobby all my life... I retired 9 years ago and have done some sort of project every winter, and ridden it, or drove it in the summer, then I usually sell it on. I did however keep last years project as I loved riding it over the summer... here is what last years looked like... also converted from EFI to carbs!

10 out of 10 or that mate..

I like your tool making especially the tube crimping die.
I also like the Silver theme. Gold on Silver looks good, but I think you need to bring the disc centres, clutch plate and spring colours together to get the score up to 11, Gold would be nice but all the same colour would be tops.

On the rear stay of the (very nice) front mudguard how have you picked up the fastener on the top calliper bolt without upsetting the alignment of the calliper?

Turn up to any Monster meet on that and be accepted..

Thanks! I may do something with the gold discs... they do look a bit odd. the mudguard stay is bolted to the caliper bracket, I just frilled and tapped a 5mm hole.

It's virtually an S4 Monster. It'll be interesting to see how it compares performance wise without the EFI.

Nice work.

Is the frame painted, or is it finished another way?

Cheers
Stuart

Hi Stuart, its powder coated... I used to spray the frames of bikes I built, but its a messy job as it creates so much over-spray... I then put a few out to powder coat, and was very disappointed in the finish and their attention to detail... then I found a guy who does an absolutely brilliant job! its a company called Redditch shot blasting and the guy who runs it is a bike enthusiast, and is meticulous! highly recommended! its a 60 mile round trip for me, but worth it for the job you get back...

I do all my own paintwork on tanks and seats though, and also hydrographic carbon finish which comes out really well and is very durable... here are a few pictures from previous builds...
