Bitubo shock

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/264523414808

Would this be an upgrade on the standard S4R shock? I have some spare money and fancy having a go at chainring it myself

Bitubo are a ‘premium’ Italian suspension manufacturer (think Ohlins/Nitron etc)
that looks like a bit of a budget offering , since it has no remote reservoir but will likely be a high quality item, plus it’s offered with a custom spring to suit your weight.
Should feel better than the 15yo Sachs OEM shock either way

If I sprung for the one with the remote reservoir where would I mount it?

When I fitted a remote reservoir shock on my S2R, the Öhlins recommended position for the reservoir was on the front right frame rail by the engine:

However, I didn't like the look of that so I cut a couple of small nicks out of the undertray beneath the seat to accommodate the hose and mounted it on the left rear subframe instead, which I thought looked much neater. If the Bitubo shock doesn't come with mounting brackets, you can easily pick up the rubber cradles for the reservoir online and use large hose clips to hold everything in place.

Thanks for that, now I want a Carbon tea tray! Lol

I’ve messaged the seller and he’s asked Bitubo for the fitting instructions.

Originally I had the remote canister for my Ohlins shock on the frame but never did like it there, then I saw the OEM location on M900S which places it on a plate behind the shock - just in front of the hoop and so made up a plate to mount it there.

The hose is a little on the long side (compared to the OEM Ohlins) but it looks so much better tucked away.

Before;

After;

Need to be careful if adjusting when the exhaust is hot though....

Have you looked at what Nitron could offer for similar money? You might get something even better for similar money. I mean that's kinda s/hand Ohlins money too but then you've got additional expense of getting it most likely re-sprung unless for your weight unless you luck out and manage to get one that's already sprung for your weight . It would probably still be worth getting any s/hand Ohlins fully rebuilt before fitting anyway, they're not renowned for their longevity but are noticeable improvement. The stuff Nitron sell look equally as good as Ohlins and are better value imho.

I would aim for one with a piggy back reservoir (like the stock Sachs shock does) otherwise you need to find space on a frame tube somewhere.

Yeah, I had a quick look too.
so either no reservoir or on a frame tube:

Length of hose permitting.
Depends a bit on how you use the bike as to whether it’s worth having, the purpose of the remote reservoir is to keep the nitrogen away from the damping oil, as prolonged use causes the gas to heat up, which affects the oil’s damping properties.

There's a nice clear picture of the bracket on the Stein-Dinse site, but a picture is all you'll get.

Looks complicated to fabricate a copy from scratch but very easy to make at the factory as it looks to be just a single stamping.
