696 Engine management light on and get you home mode.
On my way home from getting new tyres ,doing around 60 mph on a busy motorway and in the dry. Suddenly engine management light come on and immediately bike is in "get you home mode" is virtually no power. Got off the motorway and stopped and engine cuts out, left it 2 minutes and it starts and runs fine.
Decided on a trial run next day on a twisty A road, ran fine for 20 minutes then same problem. Googled it and got lost in everyone's electrical gremlins. Local Ducati dealer closed today, but any info would be welcome, BTW it is fitted with Leo Vinci's with no baffles, could it be a heat/fueling issue? |

Are the cans new? If not, and the bike has been OK with them before, then it's probably nothing to do with them. Nothing has changed.
MrsC's bike (696 with more miles on it than some space craft) has had a number of electrical issues caused by corroded contacts or insulation rubbing through. The way to find the problem is first, identify which circuit has failed, and then, using the wiring diagram at the back of the manual, work out where that circuit goes on the bike. Then it's out with the meter to check for opens and shorts. Isn't there a way to get the ECU to display stored error codes? I'm sure there's something in the service manual along those lines. If it tells you that, say, a sensor has intermittently failed, then that's your starting point. |

Going to drop into local dealer tomorrow, they have a diagnostic tool which lets them access the stored faults..........It feels like a sensor perhaps erroneously thinking it's running too hot.
I'll confirm the findings. Thanks for your input. |

In my experience the engine mgmt light is usually sensor related (failed or failing). Easy for a dealer to find out what the error is, which is OK if you're near a dealer. Otherwise I think the later versions of DucDiag software can talk to the 696/796/1100 ECU which is handy if you don't have a dealer nearby.

Thanks for the "heads-up" Darren, dropped into local super shiny dealer yesterday and basically got the "bums rush" taking bookings for June, very busy, too many PDIs blah blah.... anyway chanced on a technician who was ex Ducati in a local shop and he has the diagnostic gizmo, too busy this week but looking at it Wednesday next.
Went a run today and it's getting worse, limped home. So I've put original cans back on and I'll try it tomorrow and report findings. Still convinced it's a contact.... probably at an injector. |

Do any of the cheap code readers work on Ducatis?

I'm using the older version of JP Diag for the M.Marelli ECU which reads and clears error codes no problem, apparently there is a newer version for 696/796/1100 etc

A proper result today I think, the diagnostic tool showed up all kinds of expensive sounding issues, including front cylinder coil and lambda sensor.....plus fitting time. Decided on another tack of dismantling
tank and checking connections and bingo....one of the battery connections completely loose! How it started or ran at all is a proper mystery! Anyway reassembled and I'll give it a run on Friday, but I'm pretty sure that was the problem. Nice design though ,Ducati, must be the most inaccessible battery (and air filter) ever dreamt up. |

...but a touch of marketing genius with the swappable panels.
What diagnostic tool did you use in the end? Fingers crossed that you've sorted it. |

Result
Yup completely fixed , loose battery connection right enough.
My local one man band bike/scooter repairer immediately said "check the battery"......thousands of pounds of diagnostics didn't have clue...... |
