696 Stator cover
When refitting the stator cover (i am fitting new generator) do I need to fit the cardboard gasket and use sealant or am i ok with just the gasket?

The 696 shouldn't have a paper gasket, just sealant (Threebond 1215 or equivalent).

You can buy pattern paper gaskets as some people prefer them to the Threebond, but they haven't been fitted by the factory for about 20 years. I think the alternator cover went to sealant first and then the clutch side shortly afterwards.
