Newbie - which Monster?

Hi to all. I'm thinking of a Monster, having just got fed up with the hard work of a 996SPS. I had a 696 on loan while the 996 was being serviced (£1100

) and the nimble ride was a revelation. The Monster will be my only bike, but which model? I can only afford used, probably up to a S4R or 1100S. What would be recommendations & are there any comparative road tests?

Then go out and buy an 1100S like he did, or buy his S4RS which is now for sale.

He sold his S4RS last a couple of weeks agao, and I sold my S4R this weekend.
Both of us have moved on to the newer bikes. If you're used to the oomph of the 996 then you may well find that the 1100S or the 1100EVO with be the right sort of compromise .

I like the 996 power, but don't really want to get too much of a handful again, particularly on the twisties. The 996 just feels too unvielding (i.e. me being chicken) on 'normal' roads

I see that Ducati Manchester have low-mileage S4R. Perhaps I should give it a try.. Mind you, just had 996 service bill - that might kill the dreams :-(

If you're looking for somehting that's a little more power controllable, then the 1100 either the older S model or the updated EVO will be a better option. I have an EVO after coming from an S4R 998 very recently.

I'll have a ride of an 1100 - I nmuch prefer the look of that to an S4R anyway. However, an £100 service on the SPS my scupper my Monster dreams :-(

If you want a Monster then S4/R/S S2R1000 has to be the choice, if you just want a Ducati then I suppose the new style 1100 but make no mistake it is not a Monster Oh and its butt ugly.....

Go on then, what would you say makes a 'Monster'? I've only ridden the 696 (on loan during the service) so have limited experience.

LOL that is why so many old style Monster owners are changing to the new shape.
The new ones are better looking, have much better handling and more fun to ride.

Try both styles, then make up your own mind.

Anne I don't doubt anything you,ve said, it may well be a better bike its just not a Monster, should they have chosen a different name then I probably would not be so anti it. Stand back and have a good look at it ....a totally different bike with the old name, just like BMW did with the Mini wrong wrong wrong Oh and its not right either
