What Colour Black?

I have a query and Im posting it outside my build thread so it catches any who may have glazed over from that!

Its to do with the “correct” colour Black Metallic for a 1995 Monster M900.

My quandary arises from receiving the bike having been resprayed, it was manufactured Black Metallic and was resprayed Black Metallic but while close, I don’t know whether it was resprayed the same Black.

Then whilst sourcing a new old stock front mudguard, I expected to have to respray it from the standard red, however when it arrived it was Black Metallic…..but a dark less sparkly Black Metallic than what I had on the resprayed bike.

Initially I made the assumption being NOS and Black Metallic that this would be the correct original Black of the original bike and all I would have to do was to match the rest of the sprayed panels to that mudguard when I undertook the respray of the other panels

But am I right, or were there a number of Black Metallics from Ducati used on various models of that period?
If the answer was …Yes, then my quest for the “correct” colour for this bike isn’t over
If the answer is -No there was only one Metallic Black out of the factory regardless of model at that time, then I have my colour.
And of course theres the other answer I am getting used to hearing, and that is - The particular shade of any colour that came out of the factory depended on the day of the week and who was spraying that day.

NOS Mudguard

Resprayed Mudguard that came on the bike ( lighter more sparkly Black)

I don’t recall the early monsters being particularly metal-flakey. Just nice bright solid red, black or yellow.

What year marking does your NOS mudguard have moulded in?

I dont have the mudguard to hand, Ive left it at the paintshop for colour matching, but will check on Tuesday.
Certainly the Black on the bike in your link is like the NOS mudguard as far as I can tell.
And, you are right the NOS Black I have on the mudguard is a near a solid Black but with a very subtle fine flake in it.
So everything is pointing to that being the right colour to go with. Thanks.

According to the Monster Bible, the 'black' used on the 1995 models had the paint code #7510. It doesn't say if it's plain or metallic but I remember the black, red and yellow models of that era being plain.

The first mention of a metallic black is for the 2000 MY with a paint code of 291.500. I don't know if that's the same as yours but there's an example here if you wanted to try. https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004UI3C44

The mudguard should have a date stamp underneath which might help clarify.

Up at the paintshop today so was able to look at the date stamp for the NOS Mudguard. Nov 2001. So I guess that means its not the correct black for a 95 M900?

That'll probably be the PPG 291.500 from the 2001 MY then.

The AA part of the part number means it is red. Black is AB, though I don’t suppose they changed the tooling for each of the different colours.

As mentioned earlier, I believe the correct black for 1995 would be #7510, but that, I think, is a plain colour rather than metallic. Are you sure it was originally metallic?
